Gottfried Silbermann Organ, Reinhardtsgrimma / Sachsen, Germany (1731) -
    Samples by Prof. Helmut Maier
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Komm, heiliger Geist, BWV 651Download View Lyrics
The frst of Bach's 18 Chorale Preludes known as the Leipzig Chorales. It is a grand fantasia with the chorale melody in the pedal. The initials J. J. precede this score, which stands for Jesu Juvat (Jesus, help!). Registration: Hauptwerk begins and ends with Principal Chorus (8-4-2-IV), the Hinterwerk is the full plenum excepting the Tertia, near the middle both mixtures are retired, and added again near the end. The pedal threoughout is Subbass 16+Oktava 8+Posaune 16, which surprisingly balances with both Hinter- and Hauptwerk with the Hauptwerk to Pedal coupler added near the end. [6:57] (A=465) HW1
Buxtehude, Dietrich: Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ, BuxWV 188Download View Lyrics
Unmitigatingly cheerful Christmas trio, subtly employing many of Buxtehude's characteristic techniques - chromaticism, triplets, antiphon and response, which provide distinction with no change in registration: right hand(s) on Hauptwerk - Principal 8' + Qvintadena 8' + Spizfleute 4' + Qvinta 3'; left hand(s) on Hinterwerk - Gedacktes 8' + Rohrfleute 4' + Octava 2' + Qvinta 1 1/2; feet on Pedal: Subbass 16' + Octaven Bass 8'. [7:11] (A=465) HW1
Pachelbel, Johann: Vom Himmel Hoch, 1st SettingDownload View Lyrics
Registration: Hinterwerk 8 Gedacktes+2 Oktava; Hauptwerk Qvintadena+4 Spizfleute; Pedal 8 Octave carries the chorale melody. [1:35] (A=465) Midi file available. HW1
Krebs, Johann Ludwig: Liebster Jesu, Oboe and OrganDownload View Lyrics
Concerted Chorale for sampled oboe and organ. Very light and bubbly organ part contrasted with creamy sampled oboe sound. [3:24] (A=465) HW1
Pachelbel, Johann: Was mein Gott will, das g'scheh' allzeit, 1st SettingDownload View Lyrics
    Chorale in the right hand (Hauptwerk: Prinzipal 8' + Oktava 4' + Oktava 2' + Kornet 3-Fach, running bass line in the left hand (Hinterwerk: Gedacktes 8' + Rohrfloete 4' + Oktava 2' + Qvinta 1 1/2). [1:33] (A=465) HW1
Krebs, Johann Ludwig: Trio in G, Br II:35Download
Lighthearted romp through several keys and textures with exceptionally active pedal part and some playful chromaticism. In measure 63 a slight change was made to avoid parallel 5ths between right and left hands. [3:41] (A=465) HW1
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Das Jesulein soll doch mein Trost, BWV 702Download View Lyrics
Fughetta on the 17th century Christmas tune, with some slightly tortured chromatic twists near the end. [1:44] (A=465) Midi file available. HW1
Pachelbel, Johann: Komm, heiliger Geist, Herre GottDownload View Lyrics
    The simplest of fughettas for one manual (HW Principal 8' + Spizfleute 4' + Octava 2'). [1:24] (A=465) HW1
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Prelude and Fugue in C minor, BWV 549Download
In this early masterwork, the bold pedal cadenza at the beginning introduces the main motif of the Prelude, which is imitated polyphonically in the manuals, with some strong repeated chords adding to the excitement. The insouciant fugue subject is played with in the manuals sufficiently for the listener to wonder if it will ever be stated in the pedal. When it finally enters, it's with more of the repeated chords, sometimes staggered between left and right hands. A brilliant flourish on the manuals brings this fugue to a surprisingly sudden end. [5:36] (A=465) HW1
Pachelbel, Johann: Nun freut euch, lieben Christen g'meinDownload View Lyrics
Introduction (Hauptwerk: Principal 8' + Octava 4' + Octava 2' + Mixtur 4 Fach) based on opening bars of the Chorale, which is stated in full in the Pedal (Psaunen Bass 16' + Octaven Bass 8'). The dramatic shift to the Hinterwerk (Gedacktes 8' + Rohrfleute 4' + Octava 2') with a softer pedal (Octaven Bass 8') for the repeat and back would be entirely feasible on the original organ with an assistant. [2:1] (A=465) HW1
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Meine Seele erhebt den Herrn, BWV 648Download View Lyrics
This transcription, the fourth Schübler Chorale, is from the 5th movement of Cantata 10, a duet for Tenor and Alto. It is a setting of the Magnificat (St. Luke 1:46-47). Registration: Hauptwerk: Qvintadena 8' (pedal part played on this manual also); Hinterwerk: Gedacktes 8' + Nassat 3' + Terzia 2'; for second half the Spizfleute 4' is added to the Hauptwerk and the Rohrfleute 4' is added to the Hinterwerk; the closing is on Qvintadena 8' alone. [2:11] (A=465) HW1
Walther, Johann Gottfried: Nun ruhen alle WälderDownload View Lyrics
Cantus in the pedal, fairly heavy ornamentation on what is, until the very end, an imitative duet based on Chorale fragments. Registration: RH Hinterwerk Gedacktes 8' + Rohrfleute 4' + Qvinta 1 1/2; LH HW Rohrfleute 8' + Spizfleute 4' + Octava 2'; Pedal: Octaven Baß 8'. [1:36] (A=465) HW1
Buxtehude, Dietrich: Ach Herr, mich armen Sünder, BuxWV 178Download View Lyrics
A serene setting of the Passion Chorale which alternates between straightforward melody and ornamental flourishes. Registration: Hauptwerk Principal 8; Hinterwerk: Gedacktes 8, Rohrfleute 4, Nassat 3, Oktava 2, Tertia 2; Pedal Subbas 16 and Oktavenbass 8 Note: German organs of this period used rounded-up numbers for pitches: 3'=2 2/3;' 1 1/2'=1 1/3;' Tertia 2'=1 3/5'. [2:21] (A=465) Midi file available. HW1
Buxtehude, Dietrich: Ach Gott und Herr, BuxWV 177Download View Lyrics
Two verses, the first with the Chorale sounded in the pedal at 4' pitch (coupled from Hauptwerk: Spizfleute 4'+Octava 4'+Octava 2'), with the manual part played on the Hinterwerk Gedacktes 8' + Rohrfleute 4' + Qvinta 2'; the second with an ornamented version of the Chorale in the soprano (Hauptwerk Qvintadena 8'+Spizfleute 4' + Qvinta 3), supported by chords on the Hinterwerk (Gedacktes 8' + Rohrfleute 4') and the Octaven Bass 8' in the Pedal. [1:53] (A=465) HW1
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Herzlich thut mich verlangen, BWV 727Download View Lyrics
One of the treasured tracks on an early Albert Schweitzer recording the Phantom acquired in his tortured teens. Registration: HW: Rohrfleute 8'; HIW: Gedacktes 8'. Rohrfleute 4', Nassat 3'; Ped: Subbass 16', I-P. For the same track played on Hauptwerk 2 with tremulant on the Hinterwerk, see: http://www.organartmedia.com/RGrimma-Demos.html [2:0] (A=465) Midi file available. HW1
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, BWV 1100Download View Lyrics
Although the chorale is written in the top voice, here it has been reassigned to the HW Octava 2' coupled to the Pedal. Top 4 voices: Hinterwerk Gedacktes 8' + Rohrfleute 4' + Nassat 3' (Rohrfleute 4' withdrawn for repeat). From the Neumeister Chorale collection. WAV file is available in RAR format: here (12.0 MB). [2:5] HW1
Pachelbel, Johann: Vom Himmel hoch, da komm' ich her, 2nd SettingDownload View Lyrics
Extended fughetta section on Hauptwerk (Principal 8' + Octava 4 + Spizfleute 4' + Octava 2 + Mixtur 4 fach coupled to Hinterwerk Gedacktes 8' + Nassat 3' + Octava 2' + Suffleute 1' + Zymbeln 2 Fach) based on first phrase of chorale with quarter notes and eighth notes, expanding to half notes for the Chorale in the Pedal (Posaunen Bass 16' + Sub Bass 16' + Octaven Bass 8') and 16th notes for the figuration in the manuals. [3:20] (A=465) HW1
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Fugue in G Major, BWV 576Download
Though some doubt this fugue was really written by J. S. Bach, it is nonetheless a perky little item. To keep things lively the Phantom does a certain amount of good-natured stop pulling. [5:4] (A=465) HW1
Buxtehude, Dietrich: Praeludium in Phrygian Mode, BuxWV 152Download
Florid beginning, short fughetta, a 3/2 variation on that fughetta theme (Hinterwerk with light Hauptwerk coupled to the Pedal), and a florid ending. [3:55] (A=465) HW1
