Gottfried Silbermann Organ, St. Georgenkirche / Rötha, Germany (1721) -
    Samples by Brett Milan
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Concerto in G minor, BWV 983Download
Three movements, [Moderato] (HW Principal 8' + Octava 4' + Octava 2' + Cymbeln II) - Adagio (HW Principal 8' + Spitzflöte 4'; OW Quintadena 8' + Rohrflöte 4') - Allegro (HW Bordun 16' + Principal 8' + Octava 4' + Octava 2' + Mixtur III; OW Gedackt 8' + Rohrflöte 4' + Sifflet 1'). A few pedal notes (Principal Bass 16' + Pedal Coppel) were added to each movement, and the Adagio was provided with several echoed passages, similar to the written-out ones in the third movement. [7:51] (A=465) HW1
Grigny, Nicolas De: Récit de Tierce en tailleDownload
The fourth part of the Gloria from Organ Mass IV, this exquisitely expressive solo in the tenor voice is a jewel of the French Baroque by a composer who lived only 31 years. The solo is played on Oberwerk: Gedackt 8' + Quintadena 8' + Principal 4' + Nasat 3' + Octava 2' + Terzia 1 3/5'. The Hauptwerk accompanies with Bordun 16' + Rohrflöte 8' + Spitzflöte 4' coupled to the pedal. [3:42] (A=465) Midi file available. HW1
Buxtehude, Dietrich: Praeludium in C Major, BuxWV 138Download
An energetic outburst of spontaneity, in many surprising sections. The complete organ works of Buxtehude are now finished at Virtually Baroque. Many thanks to Russ Davis for suggesting the project and to Boris Mudrinic for providing so many scores. [3:55] (A=465) HW1
Pachelbel, Johann: Ich ruf zu dir, 1st SettingDownload View Lyrics
    Four voice setting for Hauptwerk (Bordun 16' + Principal 8' + Octava 4 + Octava 2' + Cymbeln II) with the repeat played softer on the Oberwerk (Quintadena 8' + Rohrflöte 4' + Octava 2' + Quinta 1 1/2' + Siflöte 1'). [3:10] (A=465) HW1
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Prelude in G Major, BWV 568Download
Another early work very much in the spirit of Buxtehude, Bach uses 5 organ points in the pedals against manual scales, interrupted by pedal cadenzas and/or huge chords in the manuals. Registration: Hauptwerk: Rohrflöte 8' + Octava 4 + Spitzflöte 4' + OW-HW Coppel; Oberwerk: Octava 2 + Mixtura III; Pedal: Principal Bass 16' + HW-PD Coppel. My approach here was to put on the Hauptwerk what I wanted to couple to the Pedal, and then add the brighter sounds from the Oberwerk. [3:6] (A=465) Midi file available. HW1
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Fantasy and Fugue in C minor, BWV 537Download
Pensive prelude joined with, some say "Tragic" others say "Uplifting" Fugue. Here the ending borders on "Thrilling." [7:42] (A=465) HW1
Buxtehude, Dietrich: Praeludium in D Major, BuxWV 139Download
Several contrasting textures and moods show Buxtehude's engaging spontaneity, this Prelude is as close to a recorded improvisation as we could hope for. [5:4] (A=465) HW1
Buxtehude, Dietrich: Toccata in G Major, BuxWV 165Download
The featured ornament for this piece is the mordant - a snappy two-note preface which consists of a downward and upward step - it is the ornament first heard in the [in]famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor of Bach. [7:28] (A=465) HW1
Buxtehude, Dietrich: Fuga in C Major "Gigue", BuxWV 174Download
A jolly old fugue in 12/8 time. The bulk of the fugue is played on alternating Hauptwerk (Rohrflöte 8'+ Octava 4' + Octava 2') and Oberwerk (Gedack 8' + Rohrflöte 4'+ Octava 2'), with the Pedal Posaune 16' waiting in the wings. It becomes a fantasy Virtual Performance at the end (only possible if two assistants have spent the last hour at the German equivalent of Starbucks) : the manuals build up gradually to full organ for a sassy finish. [3:4] (A=465) Midi file available. HW1
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Prelude & Fugue ("St. Anne") in Eb Major, BWV 552Download View Lyrics
These two pieces constitute the beginning and ending of Bach's Die Clavier-Übung, Part III. For a graphic explication see Dr. Timothy Smith's Trinitarian and Catechistic Connotations of the Clavier-Übung III . They are a towering monument amidst Bach's already impressive array of organ masterpieces. For broadband users, or if you're extremely patient: Download (36 MB). [15:17] (A=465) HW1
