Gottfried Silbermann Organ, St. Georgenkirche / Rötha, Germany (1721) - Samples by Brett Milan
- Buxtehude, Dietrich: Praeludium (and Fugue) in C Major, BuxWV 136
- In the middle of the 13th measure of this 96-measure piece is the indication "Fuga" with a jaunty subject and the jazzy chromatic descending
syncopation that accompanies it, but, typical of the sectional, improvisational nature of Buxtehude's organ works, measure 55 starts an entirely
different motiv with the indication "allegro" and at the 66th measure there is an abrupt shift to 12/8 meter, which persists to the end.
[4:43] (A=465)
HW1
- Zachau, Friedrich Wilhelm: Aus tiefer Noth schrei' ich zu dir
- The chorale subject, a German chorale based on Psalm 130, De Profundis, is soloed out in the right hand on the Oberwerk with a luscious Cornet
combination; two contrapuntal voices sound on sombre flues of the Hauptwerk coupled to the pedal for the third voice.
[3:19] (A=465)
HW1
- Buxtehude, Dietrich: Lobt Gott, Ihr Christen, allzugleich, BuxWV 202
- Jolly little Christmas setting. Registration: RH Chorale Oberwerk - Tutti;
LH Bordun 16' + Rohrflöte 8' + Octava 4' + Octava 2';
PD Principal Bass 16' + Pedal Coppel
[1:4] (A=465)
HW1
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Prelude and Fugue in D minor, BWV 539
- The Prelude, for manuals alone, is published in a popular wedding album, and so has been heard often. I doubt that many have dealt with the fugue,
which is unusual in that the pedal seems to be nearly always present, and the arpeggiated episodes put one in mind of an Italian concerto. It is
actually transcribed from the second movement of BWV 1001, Sonata No. 1 for Solo Violin in G
minor (along with BWV 1000, transcribed for solo Lute). Thanks to Graham Pearce for telling
me this.
[6:47] (A=465)
HW1
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Fugue on the Magnificat, BWV 733
- For full organ and pedal, which takes a long time to come in, but is worth the wait.
[4:14] (A=465)
HW1
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Fantasia (Concerto) in G Major, BWV 571
- Divided into three sections Fantasia, Adagio and Allegro, this piece is a lot smaller in scope than the enormous G Major Fantasie that follows it in
the Schmieder catalog, but it is not without its charming moments. The restful middle movement uses the Oberwerk Quintadena 8' and coupled to
Hauptwerk Spitzflöte 4'.
[7:9] (A=465)
HW1
- Sweelinck, Jan Pieterszoon: Durch Adams Fall ist ganz verderbt
- Two variations, the first with the Chorale sounded on the Pedal 8' Trommete coupled to the Hauptwerk Principal 8 (to which is coupled the Oberwerk
Principal 4; + Octava 2' + Mixtura III), the second with the the Chorale sounded on the Oberwerk (Gedackt 8' + Quintadena 8' + Principal 4' +
Rohrflöte 4' + Nassard 3 + Octava 2 + Quinta 1 1/2) accompanied by Hauptwerk (Rohrflöte 8' + Octava 4') coupled to the Pedal (Principal Bass
16').
[4:1] (A=465)
HW1
- Grigny, Nicolas De: Premier Sanctus en talle à 5
- Calls for Petit Plein Jeu for manuals and Pedal Trompette.
[0:42] (A=465)
HW1
- Sweelinck, Jan Pieterszoon: Variations on Soll es sein
- Eight variations on a secular song.
[7:35] (A=465)
HW1
- Krebs, Johann Ludwig: Fugue in Am, Br II:18
- Marked "pro Organo Pleno" ("for Full Organ") with chromatic subject in 3/4 time, the intensity builds to a surpringly sudden conclusion.
[3:36] (A=465)
HW1
- Scheidemann, Heinrich: Praeambulum No. 3 in D minor
- Another simple intonation with just a hint of polyphony. Mutopia Project score is available here.
[0:59] (A=465)
HW1
- Pachelbel, Johann: Wo Gott zum Haus nicht gibt sein' Gunst, 2nd Setting
- Trio with Chorale in the Pedal. Registration: RH HW Principal 8' + Octava 4' + Spitzflöte 4' + Octava 2' + Mixtur III Fach; LH OW Gedackt 8' +
Quintadena 8' + Principal 4' + Nasat 3' + Octava 2' + Terzia 1 3/5' + Mixtur III Fach; Pedal: Trommete 8'.
[1:46] (A=465)
HW1
- Buxtehude, Dietrich: Von Gott will ich nicht lassen, BuxWV 221
- Robust registration and very forthright rhythms for this text, which often is treated rather wistfully. Registration: HW: Bordun 16' + Principal 8' +
Quinta 3' + Octava 2' + Mixtur III + Cymbeln II; OW/HW coupler; OW: Gedakt 8' + Principal 4' + Octava 2' + Mixtur III; PD: Principal Bass 16' +
Posaune 16' + Trommete 8'.
[1:45] (A=465)
HW1
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Jesu, meines Lebens Leben, BWV 1107
- A playful romp totally at odds with the doleful text (Hauptwerk: Bordun 16' + Principal 8' + Octava 4' + Octava 2' + Mixtur III + Cymbeln II). The
meter switches to 12/8 in the middle (Oberwerk: Gedackt' 8' + Principal 4' + Octava 2' + Quinta 1 1/2' + Sifflet 1' coupled to Hauptwerk Cymbeln
II). The chorale melody bounces around from voice to voice, finally landing on the Pedal Trommete 8'.
[1:25] (A=465)
HW1
- Buxtehude, Dietrich: Magnificat Primi Toni, BuxWV 203
- Grand, charming, forthright, festive, grave, frivolous, tender, industrious, and fervent, in that order.
[6:55] (A=465)
HW1
- Krebs, Johann Ludwig: Fantasia in F, Br II:05
- This brief paroxysm of delight was written for three manuals but adapted to two using general combinations.
[1:37] (A=465)
