Gottfried Silbermann Organ, St. Marienkirche / Rötha, Germany (1722) -
    Samples by Brett Milan
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Prelude and Fugue in A minor, BWV 543Download
One of the mature masterworks. The Prelude starts with arpeggios on the manuals, to which is added a pedal point, proceeding to manual flourishes, a pedal solo based on the opening motive, and proceeding to a strong dialogue between manual and pedals. The Fugue has an infectious momentum and ends with one of the strangest cadenzas in all of Bach. The Pedal of only one 16' stop is bolstered by Manual II, which is also used very creatively as a foil to Manual I. The illusion of ringing of bells in this piece seems to be a result of the spacious acoustics. [10:54] HW1
Buxtehude, Dietrich: Ach Gott und Herr, BuxWV 177Download View Lyrics
Two verses, the first with the Chorale sounded in the pedal at 4' pitch (Man. I Principal 8', PD coupled to Man. II Rohrflöte 4' + Octava 2'), the second with an ornamented version of the Chorale in the soprano (LH Man. I Principal 8' + Octava 4'; RH Man II full cornet; PD 16 Subbass + Man. I/P). [1:57] HW1
Pachelbel, Johann: Toccata in G minor (IV)Download
Like the other 3 Toccatas in this key, organ points in the pedal ground the harmonic structure and the manual plays simply and joyfully in mostly two voices. [1:38] (A=465) HW1
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Ach bleib bei uns, Herr Jesu Christ, BWV 649Download View Lyrics
This transcription is from the 5th movement of Cantata 6 for the second day of Easter: "Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden." Regisstration - Man. I Prinzipal 8+Oktava 4+Quinta 1 1/2; Man. 2 Full cornet; Pedal Subbass 16 and Man. I/Pedal coupler. The pedal is a little jumpy as it tries to avoid overlaps with the left hand. [2:37] Midi file available. HW1
Buxtehude, Dietrich: Magnificat Primi Toni, BuxWV 204Download View Lyrics
    Festive setting with several mini-textures. Registration: Man. I Principal 8' + Octava 4' + Quinta 1 1/3' + Cymbeln II; Man. II Gedeckt 8' + Rohrflöte 4 + Nassat 3' + Octava 2'; Pedal Subbass 16' + Man. II/PD coupler. [2:7] (A=465) HW1
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Fugue in G Major "Gigue", BWV 577Download
    Crisp and bright and fast, this is Bach at his jolliest! Regisstration: Man. 1 Prinzipal 8 + Oktava 4 + Sufflet 1 +Cymbeln 2 rank; Man. 2: Gedackt 8 + Rohrflöte 4 + Nassat 3 + 2 Prinzipal; Pedal 16 Subbass+ Man. II/Pedal coupler. [3:31] Midi file available. HW1
Pachelbel, Johann: Magnificat Quarti ToniDownload View Lyrics
Eight fugues not related to any particular Chorale tune. Manual I alternates and sometimes couples with Manual II, except for the last Fugue, which utilizes a fuller organ with pedal for a fulfilling conclusion. [9:57] (A=465) HW1
Buxtehude, Dietrich: Canzonetta in G minor, BuxWV 173Download
Two-measure motiv that basically follows the circle of fifths, repeated in all 4 voices with out much embroidery. An extra tenor note (A) was added in the last measure to fill out the harmony, and the final cadence is bolstered by the Pedal. Registration: HW Principal 8' + Octava 4' + Octava 2' + Qvinta 1 1/2' + Sufflet 1'; Pedal Subbass 16'. Score courtesy of Ian Dyson. [1:20] (A=465) HW1
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Jesus Christus, unser Heiland, BWV 666Download View Lyrics
An exquisitely calm setting of a Lenten text for manuals alone, with a single pedal note underlying the ending. Registration: Principal 8' and Octave 4'. [3:46] (A=465) Midi file available. HW1
Pachelbel, Johann: Wenn wir in höchsten nöthen seinDownload View Lyrics
    For one manual with Chorale in soprano voice. Registration: Principal 8' + Gedackt 8' + Octava 4' + Rohrflöte 4' + Nasat 3'. [2:33] (A=465) HW1
Sweelinck, Jan Pieterszoon: Echo Fantasia 1 (Dorian)Download
A long exposition precedes the sort of echo passages which contrast one manual with another, marked in the score by f[orte] and p[iano]. The Phantom Organist perceived a few more playful echoes possible near the end that were not written in the score. Registration: Man. 1 (forte): Principal 8 + Oktava 4 + Sufflet 1; Man. 2 (piano): 8 Gedackt + 4 Rohrflöte. [8:12] (A=465) Midi file available. HW1
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ, BWV 697Download View Lyrics
Four-voice fughetta on the Christmas hymn for one manual and pedal (coupled to Man. II). [0:50] HW1
Pachelbel, Johann: Ricercare in C minorDownload
A chromatic theme pervades the first two sections, the first of which is played on Manual 1 (Principal 8 and Octava 4), the second on the Manual 2 (Gedackt 8 + Rohrflöte 4 + Octava 2). A perky little theme enters in the third section, which is combined with the chromatic theme on Man. 1 with the Quinta 1 1/2 added to the former sounds. [5:1] (A=465) Midi file available. HW1
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Herr Jesu Christ, dich zu uns wend, BWV 709Download View Lyrics
Short but extremely florid setting of this chorale. Registration: Man 2 Chorale Full cornet; Man 1 Principal 8' + Octava 4'; Pedal Subbass 16' + I/PD coupler. [1:38] (A=465) HW1
