Gottfried Silbermann Organ, St. Marienkirche / Rötha, Germany (1722) -
    Samples by Brett Milan
Bach, Johann Sebastian: An Wasserflüssen Babylon, BWV 653bDownload View Lyrics
A variation of the Leipzig Chorale of the same name with double pedal, less ornamentation throughout, and the Chorale played in the soprano rather than the tenor voice. These changes alone make it quite a different piece, but when you compare how Bach treats passing tones and how he allocates the two pedal parts, you realize what a marvelous orchestrator and improvisor he was. Regustration: Hauptwerk 8 Prinzipal; Positiv partial cornet (omitting the 2'); Hauptwerk to Pedal coupler. [4:44] Midi file available. HW1
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Trio in C minor, BWV 585Download

Bach, Johann Sebastian: Symphonia to Cantata 4, BWV 004aDownload View Lyrics
Transcription of the 1st movement of the Cantata for the First Day of Easter, this extremely short piece sets a dramatic mood for this rest of the cantata. Bach, Johann Sebastian: Wir glauben all an einen Gott, BWV 1098Download View Lyrics
From the Neumeister Chorale Collection., a full setting on the majestic chorale tune associated with the German creed, with the bottom voice sounded on the pedal.. Registration is for Principal 8 + Octave 4 and Quinta 1 1/2, with Pedal 16 Subbass coupled to the manual. [2:13] (A=465) HW1
Pachelbel, Johann: Ricercare in F# minorDownload
The "subject is used both in "recto" and "inversus" form (right side up and upside down. It explores a very unusual key for instruments of the period. [3:14] (A=465) Midi file available. HW1
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Vater Unser im Himmelreich, BWV 737Download View Lyrics
Schweitzer calls this piece "A motet without words, in which the soul sends to Heaven the prayer of prayers." The registration is Gedackt 8' + Oktave 4' + Octave 2' with Pedal Subbas 16' coupled to the manual. [1:39] (A=465) HW1
Buxtehude, Dietrich: Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern, BuxWV 223Download View Lyrics
A pastorale setting of variations on the Epiphany Chorale, "How Brightly Shines the Morning Star," interrupted by occasional florid passages, with sparing use of pedal. [7:24] (A=465) HW1

Bach, Johann Sebastian: Symphonia to Cantata 12, BWV 012aDownload View Lyrics
Transcription of the 1st movement of the Cantata for the Third Sunday of Easter, known as Jubilate. The text "Weeping, wailing, grieving, fearing, dread and need are the Christians' tearful bread" is merely an introduction to an ultimately redemptive cantata. [2:2] Midi file available. HW1
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Wenn wir in höchsten Nöten, BWV 668Download View Lyrics
The famous last piece of Bach, dictated in a darkened room to his son-in-law Altnikol. The simplicity of this setting is nevertheless laden with the circumstance of its writing. There are those who doubt the authenticity of this affecting story. Registration - Man. 1: Prinzipal 8'; Man. II: Gedackt 8' + Rohrflöte 4' +Nassat 3' +Tertia 1 3/5'; Pedal: Subbass 16' and Man. I/Pedal Coupler. [4:37] Midi file available. HW1
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Fantasia in C Major (Incomplete), BWV 573Download
This breath of fresh air is just waiting for someone brilliant to finish it. Perhaps it should be the final on a baroque composition exam. Bach, Johann Sebastian: Gelobet Seist Du, Jesu Christ, BWV 604Download View Lyrics
Short setting of a German Christmas chorale from the Liturgical Year. The chorale is sounded an octave lower on Man. I 4 Oktava+Quinta 1 1/2, yielding a quasi cornet sound. Man. II has Gedackt 8 and Rohrflöte drawn, and Pedal uses the Subbass 16 and the Man. 2/Pedal coupler. [1:20] Midi file available. HW1
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Herr Gott, Nun Schleuss den Himmel Auf, BWV 1092Download View Lyrics
There are a couple of echo effects, and a flourish near the end that is reminiscent of other chorale harmonizations. The Phantom Organist, as is his wont, has added some ad lib pedal notes. In this imaginary virtual performance, the assistant stands on the right side. The Gedackt 8 and Pedal Coppel are drawn on the left jamb, on the right jamb, the Rohrflöte and Quinta 1 1/2; for the repeat and for echoes, the assistant draws the Oktava 4; before the florid section at the end, the assistant adds both the Oktava 2 and the Cymbeln 2. [2:15] (A=465) HW1
Bach, Johann Sebastian: O Jesu, wie ist dein Gestalt, BWV 1094Download View Lyrics
This piece is marked "Adagio," and the Phantom Organist has registered it softly for maximum enjoyment of the subtle harmonies: Man. 2 Gedackt 8 with or without the Rohrflöte. [2:18] (A=465) HW1

Third movement of Veni Creator, played on a piquant combination suggested by the Schola Cantorum Edition. RH on Manual I: Principal 8' + Quinta 2' + Sufflet 1. LH on Manual II: Gedackt 8' + Nassat 3' + Tertia. [2:49] HW1
Bach, Johann Sebastian: In Dir Ist Freude, BWV 615Download View Lyrics
A bell-like motive in the pedal emphasizes the idea of ringing in the new year, but bursts of joy are appropriate for any festive occasion. [2:37] HW1
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Allein Gott in der Höh' sei Ehr', BWV 675Download View Lyrics
Cheerful setting of the German Gloria with the melody in the alto. Intriguing interplay of triplets and duplets, sometimes simultaneously. Registration: Principal 8' + Octava 4' + Octava 2' (Repeat: Gedackt 8' + Rohrflöte 4' + Octava 2) [3:45] (A=465) HW1
