Grygar Organ at Holy Cross in Litomysl, Czech Republic (2001) Samples by Jiri Zurek Special Bach Temperament - http://www.larips.com/
- Gigout, Eugène: Grand Choeur Dialogué
- A dialogue that has been cleverly conceived either for two organs, one with and one without pedal, or for two divisions of the same organ, in the
grand French Romantic style. Uses a custom 4 manual subset in a multilayered recording. WAV file is available in RAR format: here (45.0 MB).
[6:37]
HW1
- Grigny, Nicolas De: Pange Lingua, en taille, à 4
- Unusually heady ornamentation, even for Grigny, on a sparkling plenum made by coupling Swell and Positiv to Hauptwerk, with the cantus sounded on the
Bombarde 8' coupled to the pedal in slow notes.
[3:16]
Midi file available.
HW1
- Karg-Elert, Sigfrid: Ringe Recht, wenn Gottes Gnade, Op. 65, No. 32
- A delightful trio with the chorale hidden in the right hand. Uses a custom 3-manual subset.
[1:22]
HW1
- Pachelbel, Johann: Ach Herr, mich armen Sünder
- Two settings treated as one, the first played on the Schwell with a bit of pedal at the end, the second on the Hauptwerk with one brief repeat on the
Positiv. Unlike many treatments the famous "Passion Chorale " is always playing, in one key or another. Uses custom set.
[4:46]
HW1
- Krebs, Johann Ludwig: Trio in C, Br II:21
- Marked Lento, this bears all the unique marks of its creator - rhythmic diversity, a certain jauntiness and an ability to soar to the top of resonant
buildings. Played on the 1.5 GB "Light" subset with RH on Positiv - Copula 8' + Copula 4' + Oktava 2' + Sesquialtera II; LH on Swell - Lieblich
Gedackt 8' + Gemshorn 4' + Waldflete 2'; Feet on the almost perfect pedal sound for trios - Subbas 16' + Cello 8' + Burdonant 4'. WAV file is
available in RAR format: here (11.3 MB).
[3:18]
HW1
- Karg-Elert, Sigfrid: Aus tiefer Not schrei Ich zu Dir, Op. 65, No. 45
- The chorale alternates between the Positiv Krummhorn and the Hauptwerk Concert Flute (with added Gamba and Gemshorn 8') and plays against appropriate
string combinations on the Schwell. Composer's instructions involve "lamentoso, lugubre and misterioso" and the organ definitely seems up to it.
Custom three manual subset.
[3:7]
HW1
- Grigny, Nicolas De: Cromorne en taille à 2 parties
- Also known as the 2nd Kyrie, this piece was written for the Cromorne stop in the tenor range. Using the 1.5 GB "Lighter" subset, this translates to
Positiv Holz Krummhorn 8' accompanied by Swell Lieblich Gedackt 8' + Gems Horn 4 and Pedal Rohrgedackt 8' + Burdonant 4'. Notes inégales are used
occasionally when appropriate and there is the usual feast of elaborate ornamentation.
[2:10]
Midi file available.
HW1
- Pachelbel, Johann: Treuer Gott, ich muss dir klagen
- Four variations on a tune also known as "Freu dich sehr, o meine Seele" (Rejoice greatly, oh my soul)." Registration: Var. 1 HW Konzert
Flete 8' + Oktave 4' + Klein Mixtur 1', repeat SW Lieblich Gedackt 8' + Principal 4' + Wald Flete 2', return to HW; Var. 2 SW Lieblich
Gedackt 8' + Nasard 2 2/3' + Wald Flete 2', repeat PO Copula Maior 8' + Prestant 4' + Oktave 2', return to SW; Var. 3 SW Cornet
(Lieblich Gedackt 8' + Principal 4' + Nasard 2 2/3' + Wald Flete 2' + Terz 1 3/5) against PO as in Var. 2, repeat PO Cornet (Copula
Maior 8' + Prestant 4' + Oktave 2' + Sesquialtera) against SW (Lieblich Gedackt 8' + Gemshorn 4' + Wald Flete 2'), return PO Cornet against HW
Principal 8' + Konzert Flete 8' + Travers Flete 4'; Var. 4 HW Konzert Flete 8' + Oktave 4' + Oktave 2' + Gross Mixtur with chorale in PD
(Posaun 16' + Octav Bas 8'), repeat HW adds Principal 8' and PD adds Contra Viola 16, with SW Oboe 8' coupled, ending HW adds Klein Mixtur 1' with PO
Copula Maior 8' + Prestant 4' + Oktave 2' coupled and SW adds Lieblich Gedackt 8' + Gemshorn 4' + Principal 4' + Nasard 2 2/3' + Wald Flete 2' +
Terz 1 3/5 .
[6:25]
HW1
- Grigny, Nicolas De: Fugue à 5 (Quoniam tu solus sanctus)
- Double duet between Positiv Cornet and Swell Vox Humana (filling in for the Cromorne that was called for) with Pedal 8' Flute providing the fifth
voice. Notes inégales are used from time to time.
[2:44]
HW1
- Gigout, Eugène: Minuetto
- No. 2 from Ten Pieces for Organ, this gentle insouciant dance begins and ends with the Oboe on the Schwell accompanied by the Hauptwerk Concert Flute
8' with Pedal Subbas 16' + Cello 8'. Intervening registrations involve foundations from Hauptwerk and Schwell, with Pedal adjusted accordingly.
[5:37]
HW1
- Walther, Johann Gottfried: Lobe den Herren
- The familiar chorale is sounded in all voices with some great ornamentation. Uses the "heavier" subset, with the manual registration unchanged until
very near the end, but the pedal increases to match the increasing loudness of the coupled Swell.
[2:5]
HW1
- Gigout, Eugène: Toccata
- No. 4 from 10 Pieces for Organ, this is a French toccata with some echoes of Widor and a Hollywood ending. Uses a custom subset.
[3:56]
HW1
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: An Wasserflüssen Babylon, BWV 653
- A setting of Psalm 137, "By the Waters of Babylon" in which the left hand ornamented chorale is sounded on the Positiv Holz Krummhorn 8, the other two
manual parts on Swell Lieblich Gedackt 8' + Gemshorn 4' (slightly reduced), and the Pedal (double at end) clearly enunciated on the Salicetbas 16' +
Rohr Gedackt 8'.
[4:31]
Midi file available.
HW1
- Grigny, Nicolas De: Trio en dialogue (4th Kyrie)
- Beginning on Jeux doux (Hauptwerk Gemshorn 8' + Travers Flete 4'), the Positiv Holzkrummhorn 8' and Swell Cornet (Lieblich Gedackt 8' + Gems
Horn 4' + Nasard 2 2/3 + Wald Flete 2' + Terz 1 3/5) alternate elegantly for a while, then the gentle pedal (Rohr Gedackt 8' coupled to
Hauptwerk) enters and an impassioned dialogue between the two solo sounds ensues. Despite the "New Bach Temperament" Grigny introduces a great deal of
dissonance by the notes and ornaments he combines.
[3:19]
HW1
- Grigny, Nicolas De: Dialogue (Qui tollis peccata mundi)
- The dialogue is between the Bombarde, Hauptwerk and Positiv (with a little help from the Swell), and it is a strong statement, indeed.
[2:58]
HW1
- Grigny, Nicolas De: Fugue à 5 (A Solis Ortus)
- The second movement of A Solis Ortus. The top two voices on the Positiv Cornet (Copula Maior 8' + Prestant 4' + Oktave 2' + Sesquialtera II), the next
two on the Positiv Holz Krummhorn 8', which has been moved to a different manual and made louder for balance, the 5th voice is in the Pedal (Rohr
Gedackt 8' + Burdonant 4').
[2:47]
HW1
- Grigny, Nicolas De: Point d'Orgue sur les Grands Jeux
- The final piece in Grigny's Livre d'Orgue, the title refers to a held note (organ point, sometimes incorrectly called pedal point, because it is most
often used in the pedal). It has many intentional dissonances near the end.
[3:7]
HW1
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Vater Unser im Himmelreich, BWV 682
- Rhythmically complex accompaniment hides the cantus firmus in canon on two manuals and pedal. The characteristic appogiatura motive reminds one of
some of the variations in The Art of the Fugue. Uses Small Baroque subset. WAV file is available in RAR format: here (40.2 MB).
