Marcussen & Son Organ / St. Stefanuschurch / Moerdijk (Noord-Brabant, The Netherlands) (1965) - Samples by Ariaan Hoogendijk
- Soler, Padré Antonio: Concerto for 2 Keyboards #1, 1: Andante
- The six concertos for two keyboards ("VI Conciertos de dos Organos Obligados") were written to entertain, amuse and instruct the Infante Gabriel of
Bourbon, son of King Charles III, in keyboard playing. This Andante is arranged for two divisions, the Hauptwerk and the Rygpositif, with
Brystwerk coupled an octave lower to the Hauptwerk.
[5:20]
HW1
- Krebs, Johann Ludwig: Ach Gott! erhör meinem Seufzen
- Very sad organ piece whose name says it all.
[3:33]
HW1
- Handel, George Frederick: Andante in Bb
- This new transcription for 3 manuals utilizes the Huvudvaerkand Pedal divisions as the orchestra, while the Brystvaerkdivision provides the organ
solo. The Rygvaerk functions sometimes as part of the orchestra and sometimes as a second manual of the solo part. Registration - Huvudvaerk:
Rørfløjte 8' + Oktav 4' + Spidsfløjte 4'; Rygpositiv: Gedakt 8' + Gedaktfløjte 4' + Nasat 1 1/3'; Brystvaerk: Traegedakt
8' + Rørfløjte 4' + Principal 2' + Sivfløjte 1'; Pedal is the versatile Principal 16' by itself.
[4:54]
HW1
- Purcell, Henry: Trumpet Tune
- Very straightforward processional with some extra riffs by the Phantom Organist.
[2:39]
HW1
- Pachelbel, Johann: Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern
- Chorale melody motives used in the manuals, full chorale in the pedal at half speed.
[2:45]
HW1
- Walther, Johann Gottfried: Variations on "Liebster Jesu"
- Chorale and four attractive baroque variations, with terrace style repeats and pedal at the beginning and end.
[5:3]
HW1
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Prelude & Fugue in E minor, BWV 533
- A brisk Prelude followed by a breezy Fugue. Registration - Huvudvaerk: Prncipal 8' + Oktav 4' + Oktav 2'; Rygpositiv: Gedakt 8' + Gedaktfløjte
4' + Gemshorn 2' + Nasat 1 1/3; Brystvaerk: Regal 8' (coupled to Rygpositiv); Pedal: Principal 16' + Basun 16' + Trumpet 8'.
[4:3]
Midi file available.
HW1
- Buxtehude, Dietrich: Puer natus in Bethlehem, BuxWV 217
- A pensive setting with the chorale relatively unadorned. Registered and recorded by Jonathan Orwig with this registration: HW Principal 8'; RP Flutes
8' + 4'; BW Flute 8' coupled
to PD and HW; PD Principal 16.
[1:25]
HW1
- Mendelssohn, Felix: Wedding March
- One of two pieces indelibly associated with weddings in popular culture. Not many organists bother to play the whole thing through to the glorious
ending. Featuring a newly completed 4-manual version of the St. Stephanuschurch Marcussen samples, the final chord shows
evidence of more than one organist playing. Could it be the Phantom Organist has imaginary friends?
[4:55]
HW1
- Grigny, Nicolas De: Basse de Trompette ou de Cromhorne
- The fifth part of the Gloria in Grigny's Messe IV (which comprises his entire published works), The notes inégales create a slightly rushed atmosphere
which slows down appropriately for the rich lower notes of the trumpet, echoed by the Cromorne, which is bolstered by a small cornet. Actual
registration: Huvudvaerk Trompet 8; Brystvaerk Traegedakt 8' + Rørfløjte 4' + Principal 2'; Rygpositiv: Sesquialtera 2 kor + Krummhorn 8' coupled to
Brystvaerk; Pedal (last note): Principal 16'.
[2:49]
Midi file available.
HW1
- Grigny, Nicolas De: Cromorne en taille à 2 parties
- Also known as the 2nd Kyrie, this piece was writtem for the Cromorne stop in the tenor range, but in this version the gentle Brystvaerk Regal 8 is
used instead. Notes inégales are used occasionally when appropriate and there is the usual feast of elaborate ornamentation.
[2:0]
Midi file available.
HW1
- Guilmant, Alexandre: Elévation No. 3, (From Opus 60)
- Statement and two variations of the Noel, "Entends ma voix fidele," intended for Christmas communion. It begins quietly on flutes, the melody is
sounded on the Krummhorn in the lower octave, and it ends again with flutes with occasional pedal punctuation.
[2:18]
HW1
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Wir glauben all' an einen Gott, BWV 681
- This highly ornamented Fughetta uses the opening motive of the chorale as its subject.
[1:12]
Midi file available.
HW1
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Prelude and Fugue in G Major, BWV 541
- A cheerful and engaging pair, this Prelude and Fugue is rated G for General Audiences. I think the stretto (a technique where the fugue subject in a
new voice begins before the old one ends, similar to a Round) at the end of the fugue is especially thrilling.
