A. Cavaillé-Coll Organ, originally Paris, France, moved to Mainz, Germany (1877) - Samples by Prof. Helmut Maier
- Franck, César: Pièce Heroïque
- Masterfully heroic writing based on simple but engaging themes, with a glorious ending.
[7:57]
HW1
- Grigny, Nicolas De: Premier Kyrie en taille, à 5
- The very first piece in Grigny's only published volume, the registration called for is Grand Plein Jeu in Manual, Reeds 8 and 4 in Pedale.
Registration: Récit.: Flûte Octaviant 4' + Plein Jeux 4 rang coupled to G.O. Bourdon 16' + Montre 8' + Prestant 4' + Nasard 3' + Octavin
2 (coupled to itself at 4'); Pédale: all available 8' stops. Uses the extended set.
[1:41]
Midi file available.
HW1
- Franck, César: Andantino
- Charming, even droll or a bit grotesque, using familiar techniques from l'Organiste - Major-minor shifts, repetition of short phrases with
slight twists, and since it has full resources, organ points in the Pedal.
[5:34]
HW1
- Buxtehude, Dietrich: Fuga in Bb Major, BuxWV 176
- Sectional fugue with repeated note in the first subject, alternating common meter and 12/8 with a dramatic moment or two and a few ad lib pedal notes.
Uses the extended set.
[4:18]
HW1
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Prelude and Fugue in F minor, BWV 534
- Moving in mood from pensive to majestic to bravura, the Prelude is thought by some to be either the work of Johann Christian Kittel (1732-1809) or of
Bach's eldest son Wilhelm Friedemann (1710-1784). The fugue subject has a characteristic trill that makes it easy to notice in the thickest of
textures. However, in this version there is no trilling in the pedal. Uses the extended set.
[9:44]
Midi file available.
HW1
- Franck, César: Chorale III
- Dedicated to "mon élève Augusta Holmes," this is the third of the monumental Trois Chorals written near the end of Franck's life. It includes the
sumptuously beautiful Adagio in A Major, which is often played by itself.
[10:57]
HW1
- Grigny, Nicolas De: A Solis Ortus
- Chorale on Pédale Trompette 8' with other voices on G.O. (Bourdon 16' + Montre 8' + Prestant 4' + Nasard 3' + Octavin 2') coupled to Récit Plein jeu 4
rangs. Uses extended version.
[1:24]
HW1
- Gigout, Eugène: Sortie
- No. 10 from Ten Pieces for Organ, Based on the tune "Adoremus in aeternum." Ponderous chords lead to a fugal exposition with the choral tune as a
subject in two tempi, then the Cantus enters the pedal in what would almost appear to be a baroque treatment, but for the spectacular ending.
[4:17]
HW1
- Grigny, Nicolas De: Verbum Supernum
- Chorale on Récit Hautbois 8' coupled to Pédale with other voices on G.O. Montre 8' + Prestant 4'.
[1:29]
HW1
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Dorian Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 538
- Although unfortunately rivaled in popularity by BWV 565, the Dorian Prelude is a wonderful energetic piece requiring three equally balanced divisions,
and the fugue is one of Bach's most thrilling works, well worth the time it takes to listen to. Uses the extended set.
[15:23]
