Schantz/Rodgers, (1966/2000) at First Baptist Church of Riverside, California recorded by Jonathan Orwig
- Walther, Johann Gottfried: Partita on "Jesu, Meine Freude"
- Nine variations on a beloved German chorale, known in English as "Jesus, all my gladness," revealing an engaging variety of moods and compositional
techniques.
[13:4]
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Allein Gott in der Höh, BWV 663
- The second setting of the German version of the plainsong Gloria in Excelsis, consisting of a majestic 3/2 accompaniment surrounding a heroically
ornamented chorale which is sounded forth on the Swell Trompete.
[6:51]
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Jesus Christus, unser Heiland, BWV 665
- A chromatic and impassioned setting of this Communion hymn. In contrast to the gentle setting in BWV 666, Bach lets out all the stops describing the
torments sufffered by Christ.
[4:5]
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Allein Gott in der Höh, BWV 664
- The sparkling trio is based on the chorale theme (often translated "To God Alone Be Glory"), which is briefly stated in the pedal at the end.
[5:13]
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Wir glauben all an einem Gott (after Krebs), BWV 740
- A setting of a chorale prelude based on the German Creed by J. S. Bach's favorite pupil, Johann Ludwig Krebs. Bach has reworked it considerably.
[3:32]
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Prelude in C Major, BWV 547a
- This prelude possesses a strong drive with some characteristic Bach lyricism and elegant modulations. Galloping 9/8 rhythmic motive on full organ and
pedal.
[4:36]
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Fugue in C Major, BWV 547b
- The fugue is tightly woven and incorporates several contrapuntal techniques. The subject is presented both right side up and inverted in various
combinations for the manuals. When the pedal finally enters the subject is slowed to half speed, a technique called augmentation.
[4:38]
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: An Wasserflüssen Babylon, BWV 653
- The third of Bach's 18 Chorale Preludes known as the Leipzig, written near the end of Bach' life,
is a setting of Psalm 137, "By the Waters of Babylon." It is very similar to another setting he wrote in 5 voices, with double pedal.
[3:57]
Midi file available.
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Fantasy and Fugue in C minor, BWV 537
- Pensive prelude joined with, some say "Tragic" others say "Uplifting" Fugue.
[6:56]
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Toccata in F Major, BWV 540a
- An vibrant, energy-filled tour de force which extends itself at the end through countless thrilling deceptive cadences.
[8:26]
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Fugue in F Major, BWV 540b
- A relatively little-known fugue, it is the companion to its oft-played sister, the Toccata in F. This double fugue is enjoyable in its own right,
however. The first subject is chromatic and I have preserved the ornaments throughout. The second subject enters on the Swell and is a jumpy little
thing. When the first theme reenters in the alto, though, Bach surprises us by following it with a pedal entrance of the second theme.
