HW2 version of Three Manual Organ based on Schantz Organ at First Baptist Church of Riverside, California (1966) - Samples by Jonathan Orwig
- Reger, Max: Herr Jesu Christ, dich zu uns wend', Op. 67, No. 9
- Simple 4-part setting in 12/8 meter with Chorale in the Soprano. Registration: Swell Rohrflute 8' + Gambe 8' + Vox Celeste 8' + Tremulant coupled to
Great: Gedackt 8' + Flute 4' and to Pedal Bourdon 16'+ Nachthorn. -2dB output volume.
[1:28]
HW2>3
- Banchieri, Adriano: Suonata Terza, Fuga Grave
- As advertised, this third fugue sounds serious, with its ponderous bass part played on Pedal division. There is a slight brightening of registration
about halfway through. Gabler Temperament with added Impulse reverberation. Output at -2dB. Mutopia Project score is available here.
[1:34]
HW2
- Karg-Elert, Sigfrid: Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern, Op. 65, No. 44
- Gentle and expressive setting using the Choir Clarinet for the chorale, except for the repeat, where it is deftly interwoven with the figurations on
the Swell (Rohrflute 8' + Gambe 8' + Voix Celeste 8'). The Pedal uses Rohrgedackt 16' (borrowed from Swell) and Nachthorn 8'. Bradley Lehman
Temperament. (Output +6dB)
[1:12]
HW2
- Krebs, Johann Ludwig: Trio in Am, Br II:36
- Angular but jolly, this was transcribed from an organ trio for recorder and harpsichord. Music recognition assistance by Jonathan Orwig, who also
sampled the organ. Registration: Right Hand: Great - Gedackt 8' + Flute 4'; Swell: Rohr Gedackt 16' + Rohr Flute 8' + Octave 4' + Nazard 2 2/3' +
Principal 2', coupled at 4' with Swell Unison Off; Pedal Rohr Gedackt 16' + Octave 8'. Temperament: Ordinaire. (Output +3dB)
[4:39]
Midi file available.
HW2
- Weckmann, Matthias: Nun freut euch, lieben Christen g'mein
- Lightly decorated chorale tune in the right hand on a trumpet, cornet and tremulant combination in canon with the straightforward chorale in the pedal
which hops down an octave to become more prominent. Output volume 0dB. 1/10 Comma temperament, Impulse reverberation added.
[1:46]
HW2
- Vierne, Louis: Canon, Op. 31, No. 6
- Slightly oriental flavor introduced because of the prominent augmented 2nd interval. Registration: SW Cornet + Gambe 8; GT Principal 8; PD Subbass' 16
+ Nachthorn 8'. Output at +1dB. Brad Lehman Temperament. Impulse reverberation added.
[2:24]
Midi file available.
HW2
- Banchieri, Adriano: Suonata Sesta, Fuga Triplicata
- The fourth voice is played on the Pedal, the other three on Great coupled to Swell. Output at +1dB with added Impulse reverberation. Temperament is
Just Intonation - Natural. Mutopia Project score is available here.

HW2
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Fugue in C minor, BWV 575
- This is an extremely playful early fugue of Bach. The subject is hesitant to proceed, but when all four measures are through, you pretty well know it
is a fugue subject. The adagio at the end just continues the surprises. The bulk of the fugue is played on the GT Gedackt 8' + Octave 4' + Larigot
1 1/3 with SW Principal 2' coupled down. The PD enters at Ms. 65 with Rohrgedackt 16' + Octave 8' + Mixture III + Fagotto 16'; on the GT the
Gedackt 8' is replaced by the Principal 8' and Mixture IV is added. The next PD change retires the Rohrgedackt 16' and draws the Bourdon 16' +
Trompete 8'. In answer to this, the Rohrgedackt 16' is added to the GT and Mixture IV to the SW. Not to be outdone, the PD adds the Choral Bass 4'.
The final registration adds the Clarion 4' to the PD and a battery of Rohrflute 8' + Gambe 8' + Gemshorn 4' + Nasard 2 2/3' to the SW (which, as I'm
sure you will remember, has always been coupled to the GT). Silbermann Temperament.

HW2
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Kyrie, Gott Heiliger Geist, BWV 671
- Full organ with the chorale played slowly in the pedal. The highly chromatic ending is striking. The three note opening of the chorale is used often
right side up and inverted, where it sounds like "Three Blind Mice." -8dB Output Volume, Brad Lehman Temperament. Impulse Reverberation added.
[4:48]
HW2
- Buxtehude, Dietrich: Praeludium in E minor, BuxWV 143
- Opens with a pedal solo then settles into a prolonged organ point in the pedal, proceeds through two fughettas which include chromaticism, passion and
drama, and ends with another organ point in the pedal. Gabler Temperament. -4dB output volume. Impulse reverberation added.
[5:5]
HW2
- Walther, Johann Gottfried: Aus meines Herzens Grunde
- Brisk ornamentation on manuals, sturdy Chorale in the Pedal, which increases dynamically. Silbermann Temperament, -6dB output volume, Impulse
reverberation added.
[1:57]
HW1
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Symphonia to Cantata 18, BWV 018a
- Transcribed for organ by the Phantom Organist from the piano score from
CD Sheet Music's 2-disc set of Bach Cantatas. The text compares sowing
of the Word of God to the rain and snow in agriculture. Temperament: Vallotti-Young, -2dB output volume, Impulse Reverberation added.
[4:36]
Midi file available.
HW2
- Franck, César: Cantabile
- Chromatic, romantic and dramatic, with moments of great relief. The solo reed is the Choir Basson 16' raised an octave. Impulse reverberation added.
(Output +0dB)
[4:16]
HW2
- Banchieri, Adriano: Suonata Seconda, Fuga Triplicata
- Fugal treatment of what sounds like the first phrase of "Jesu, meine Freude," bass part played on Pedal division. Meantone 5 temperament with added
Impulse reverberation. Output at -4dB. Mutopia Project score is available here.
[1:14]
HW2
- Reger, Max: Canzone, Op. 63, No. 3
- A compelling, rangy melody for Swell Hautbois with other 8-foot stops, accompanied by Choir string and flute célestes and a gentle Pedal, with
occasional jazzy elements. Impulse reverberation added. Uses "Well Temperament-Valloti-Young."
[2:44]
HW2
- Titelouze, Jean: Ave Maris Stella
- Four versets: the first is registered loudly for SW coupled at 4' to GT with Cantus in PD; the second is bright but softer in four voices, again SW
coupled at 4' to GT; the third is a trio between Swell Cornet, GT Principal 8' + Flute 4' and CH Basson 16' coupled to PD; the fourth is in two parts,
the first in 4/2 Meter and fugue-like, with the fourth voice settling into an Organ Point (held note) which merges into the Common Meter section which
swirls around in almost medieval fashion. Bradley Lehman Temperament. Impulse reverberation added. Mutopia Project score is available here.
[7:6]
HW2
- Franck, César: Andantino
- Charming, even droll or a bit grotesque, using familiar techniques from l'Organiste - Major-minor shifts, repetition of short phrases with
slight twists, and since it has full resources, organ points in the Pedal. +1dB output value, Brad Lehman Temperament, Impulse Reverberation added
[5:34]
HW2
- Gigout, Eugène: Andantino
- No. 4 from Twelve Pieces for Organ, this lush piece uses chromaticism, dynamics and triplets to while away the time pleasantly.
[2:15]
HW2>3
- Karg-Elert, Sigfrid: Erschienen ist der herrlich Tag, Op. 65, No. 25
- Initial imitation between Soprano and Tenor voices emphasizes the fanfare implicit in the Chorale. Nine-voice chords at the end test the limits of
human hearing.
[1:16]
HW2>3
- Walther, Johann Gottfried: Preludio con Fuga C-Dur
- Mostly for manuals. The Swell 16' Lieblich Gedackt coupled to Great Principal Chorus adds gravity to the Prelude, and the lighter Fugue skips between
Great and Swell, until the ending, during which the Pedal supports the final cadence. -4dB output volume. Impulse reverberation added. Temperament:
Pitagòric segons Henri Arnaut de Zwolle (ca. 1400-1466), Compositio timbriae, quod est initium organorum et clavichordiorum, ca. 1440.
Temperament was made with a new online tool, more information available here.
