HW2 version of Three Manual Organ based on Schantz Organ at First Baptist Church of Riverside, California (1966) - Samples by Jonathan Orwig
- Couperin, Louis: Chaconne in G minor
- Rondeau interspersed with three couplets. Brad Lehman Temperament. Impulse reverberation added. Score edited by Pierre Gouin available at the WIMA: Werner Icking Music Archive.
[3:9]
HW2>3
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Toccata and Fugue in E Major, BWV 566
- Divided into four sections, this early piece resembles, in form at least, the Preludes and Fugues of Buxtehude. The first section alternates manual or
pedal cadenzas with very dense suspended chords. Then follows a charming fughetta with a great deal of repetition following the circle of fifths. A
brief flourish for manuals in the third section ends with an even briefer pedal cadenza punctuated with 9-voice chords. The fourth section, in 3/4
time, is polyphonic with a catchy rhythmic subject. Brad Lehman Temperament, -11dB output volume, Impulse Reverberation added.
[9:26]
HW2
- Walther, Johann Gottfried: Puer natus in Bethlehem
- Canon between Pedal (Rohr Gedackt 16' + Octave 8' with Choir Basson 16' + Clarinet 8' coupled down) and top manual voice (Great Principal 8' + Octave
4' + Waldflute 2' + Larigot 1 1/3). Impulse reverberation added. Welltempered 5th comma Temperament.
[1:34]
HW2
- Franck, César: Prélude, Fugue et Variation
- Actually 4 sections. 1) Andante cantabile: lilting 9/8 melody on Swell Trompette 8' + Gambe 8' with one or two voices on Great Gedeckt 8'
coupled to Choir Gemshorn 8', and another one or two on Pedal Bourdon 16' + Nachthorn 8'. 2) Lento: interlude with louder registration.
3) Allegro ma non troppo: Beautfully worked out Fugue with Great coupled to Swell. 4) Andantino: The original melody and
registration are reiterated, but the accompanying figuration is mostly in sixteenth notes. -2dB output value, Brad Lehman Temperament, Impulse
Reverberation added.
[8:4]
HW2
- Titelouze, Jean: Veni Creator (4 verses)
- Four versets: the first has the Chorale on the Pedal Trompete; the second is played manualiter with Chorale in the soprano voice; the third is labeled
"Canon in Diapason" - an exact canon between Pedal and Swell Cornet at the octave with two-beat time interval; the fourth is quasi-fugal, with three
voices played on a full manual plenum and the bass part played on Pedal with reeds. Output at -3dB with MeanTone 5th Comma Temperament. Impulse
reverberation added. Mutopia Project score is available here.
[7:28]
HW2
- Kauffmann, Georg Friedrich: O Jesulein süß
- This simple setting probably does not do justice to this former luminary of the organ world. The left hand quasi pedal part is on the
SW Lieblich Gedackt 16, + Gambe 8' + Octave 4'; the right hand in one or two voices is on CH Clarinet 8' + Tremulant. Temperament:
MeanToneQuarterTone-PietroAaron. Output at +4dB. Impulse reverberation added. WAV file is available in RAR format: here (7.0 MB). Thanks to David Solomons for his English translation of this
text, performed here
[1:19]
HW2
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam, BWV 685
- Intimate setting in three parts from the small German Organ Mass. -2dB output volume. Meantone 6th comma temperament. Impulse reverberation added.
[1:33]
Midi file available.
HW2
- Lübeck, Vincent: Nun lasst uns Gott dem Herren
- There are 6 verses set (verses 3 and 6 of the 8 verses available were omitted). Verse 1 and 2 are for two contrasting manuals plus double pedal. Verse
3 uses a running melody in the right hand and staccato chords in the left hand and pedal. Verse 4 for manuals alone, introduces a little 3-note
motive and playful echoes between the manuals. Verse 5 is much like verse 3, and verse 6 ends the set quietly on two manuals. Output at -2dB,
Organ-Gabler temperament, Impulse reverberation added.
[4:45]
HW2
- Reger, Max: Pastorale, Op. 65, No. 3
- Somewhat meandering and acerbic trio sonata in which the virtual swell shades get a real workout, ending with a sweet coda. +3dB, Brad Lehman
temperament, Impulse reverberation added. WAV file is available in RAR format: here (17.3 MB).
[3:10]
HW2
- Buxtehude, Dietrich: Lobt Gott, Ihr Christen, allzugleich, BuxWV 202
- Jolly little Christmas setting. Showing the newly fixed Great Cornet V against a fairly full Swell and moderate pedal. Brad Lehman Temperament.
[1:3]
HW2
- Reger, Max: Canon, Op. 63, No. 11
- Though it contains the usual Regerisms (pumping up and down of swell pedals, chromatic adventurism and odd syncopations), it is a very strict canon at
the seventh, with a delay of 2 beats that narrows between measures 14 and 15 to one beat. The overall effect is eerily modern, even ear-cleansing.
Impulse reverberation added using "Well Temperament-Young."
[2:10]
HW2
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: In Dulci Jubilo, BWV 729
- A celebratory chorale harmonization with intricate passages between phrases of the Chorale in German Lutheran tradition. Registration: Great and Pedal
reeds and flues with Choir 16' Basson and Trompete Enchamade coupled to both. -10dB output volume. Impulse reverberation added. Temperament:
Werckmeister III.
[2:0]
HW2
- Vierne, Louis: Scherzetto, Op. 31, No. 14
- Frenzied French fun for flues. Valotti-Young Temperament.
[3:37]
Midi file available.
HW2
- Karg-Elert, Sigfrid: Gott des Himmels und der Erden, Op. 65, No. 35
- For one manual with varied registrations suggested by the composer "Alla Pastorale." Impulse reverberation added. Uses "Well Temperament Kellner."
Output +3dB.
[1:54]
HW2
- Krebs, Johann Ludwig: Prelude and Fugue in F# Major, Br I:07
- The gentle prelude in 12/8 meter is followed by a chromatic fugue in Common Meter. The unusual key sounds only slightly edgy in Mean Tone Modified
Sixth Comma, but it represents the worst case for Mean Tone Fifth Comma (an excerpt can be heard here). No reverberation added. For even less edge, listen to the opening in Bradley Lehman temperament.
[5:57]
HW2
- Mendelssohn, Felix: Sonata V, Andante con moto
- Restful Siciliano with staccato pedal. Registration: CH Gemshorn 8' + Erzahler 8' + Unda Maris 8' + Flute 4' + Tremulant coupled to SW Rohrflute 8'
+ Gambe 8' + Voix Celeste 8' + Tremulant; GT Gedackt 8' coupled to SW; PD Bourdon 16' + Nachthorn 8' + SW/PD; at end, Rohr Gedeckt 16' replaces
Bourdon 16'. Temperament: Meantone 6.
[2:53]
HW2
- Handel, George Frederick: Processional from Judas Maccabaeus
- Stately march showing off quite a dynamic range. -6dB output volume. Brad Lehman temperament. No added reverberation.
[2:39]
HW2
- Walther, Johann Gottfried: Preludio con Fuga d-moll
- The Prelude contains, sequential repetition, echo effects, and less than usual ornamentation. The short Fugue contains a recognizable repeated note
and very short episodes. Impulse reverberation added. -4dB output volume. Brad Lehman Temperament.
