Schantz Organ at First Baptist Church of Riverside, California (1966) - Samples by Jonathan Orwig
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Komm, heiliger Geist, BWV 651Download View Lyrics
From Bach's "Leipzig" Chorales (The 18). The first chorale setting is a grand fantasia in the manuals over a prolonged sounding of the chorale made prominent by the 16' pedal reed. Output volume: -1dB. Impulse reverberation added. Temperament: Young. [6:43] HW2
Pachelbel, Johann: Herr Christ der ein'ge Gottes SohnDownload View Lyrics
Four part fughetta on Chorale phrases (played on Great) followed by a slower sounding of the complete Chorale in the Pedal; for the repeated portion on Swell alone, the Pedal is reduced appropriately, reverting to beginning registration after the repeat with a 32' added to the Pedal at the end. WellTemperament-Kellner, -4dB output volume, Impulse reverberation added. [3:12] HW2
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Trio Sonata No. 2, BWV 526Download
The Vivace [GT Gedackt 8' + 4 Flute; SW Rohrflute 8' + Principal 2'; CH Gemshorn 8'; PD Rohr Gedackt 16' + CH-PD 8 Coupler] starts with the two hands playing parallel thirds, followed by a scintillating dialogue, and coming together in thirds again to modulate to a different key. Interesting new ideas abound, and much use is made of trills and held notes. A single measure in the pedal transitions smoothly to an abbreviated form of the beginning. In the Largo [GT CH-GT 8'; SW 8 Gambe + 8 Gambe Celeste + Tremulant; CH Gemshorn 8' +Erzahler 8' + Unda Maris 8' + Tremulant; PD 16 Rohr Gedackt + 8 Nachthorn] long held notes in one hand intertwine with an expressive lyrical motive, underpinned by a prodding bass line. The Allegro [GT Flute Harmonique; 8' + Octave 4' + Larigot 1 1/3'; SW Rohrflute + Octave 4' + Principal 2' + Scharff IV; PD 16 Bourdon + 8 Octave] has two main themes, the first bold and forthright, the second angular, almost brash, which provide contrasting sections but are not used together. Trills and held notes figure in this last movement as well. Impulse reverberation added, Brad Lehman temperament, +2dB output. [10:41] HW2
Dupré, Marcel: Magnificat I, Opus 18, No. 10Download View Lyrics
When I used to play this piece, it was as hard as walking on eggshells, but the result of these intricately overlapping suspensions is as delicate as a Fabergé egg. Flutes from Swell and Choir with tremulant added to Great Harmonic Flute 8, Pedal 16' Bourdon + Nachthorn 8. Brad Lehman Temperament, -4dB output volume, Impulse Reverberation added. [3:6] HW2
Banchieri, Adriano: Suonata Quarta, Fuga CromaticaDownload
Featuring powerful reeds, this deliberately ponderous interpretation is just one of many possibilities Brad Lehman Temperament, output at -6dB with added Impulse reverberation. Mutopia Project score is available here. [1:35] HW2
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Vom Himmel Kam Der Engel Schaar, BWV 607Download View Lyrics
An alternate version combining some of the suggestions in the Riemenschneider edition, created in response to a listener's request. No reverberation added. +1dB output volume. Brad Lehman Temperament. [1:4] Midi file available. HW2
Bach, Johann Sebastian: O Herre Gott, dein göttlich Wort, BWV 1110Download View Lyrics
Transcribed as a trio with a quasi-bass on the Swell, baroque-style chipperness on the Great and from one to three 4' stops on the Pedal. Impulse Reverberation added. Werkmeister 3 Temperament. [2:2] HW2
Banchieri, Adriano: Suonata Quinta, Fuga HarmonicaDownload
The characteristic Bb of F Major is missing until the very end, for the Plagal cadence. Three parts are played on the manual, one on the Pedal. Werckmeister III Temperament, output at +2dB with added Impulse reverberation. Mutopia Project score is available here. [1:3] HW2
Buxtehude, Dietrich: Mensch, willt du leben seliglich, BuxWV 206Download View Lyrics
One of Buxtehude's more serene chorale preludes. Registration: CH Vox Humana 8' with trem; SW Rohrfloete 8'; PD Rohr Ged. 16' Meantone 5th comma, no extra reverb. [1:53] HW2
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Christum Wir Sollen Loben Schon, BWV 611Download View Lyrics
Bach at his most mysterious, the chorale is in the alto voice, the pedal is constantly descending, the other two voices form an arabesque of unusual quiet joy. The words dwell on the mystery of Christ's incarnation, and its farflung consequences. Registration: strings, 8' flutes and celestes of Swell and Choir coupled to Great, Brad Lehman Temperament, Impulse Reverberation added, 2dB output volume, which puts the right channel just under clipping, due to the double pedal at the end. [2:3] Midi file available. HW2
Buxtehude, Dietrich: Praeludium in G Major, BuxWV 147Download
The score indicates the left hand for what would in similar pieces be a pedal cadenza followed by an organ point. A light-hearted short section follows, ending with rapid eccentric scalar flourishes. The meat of the piece is a four-voice fughetta that brings to mind J. S. Bach's St. Anne Fugue, but it ends with characteristic Buxtehude figuration and a final soprano flourish. Brad Lehman Temperament. -3dB output volume. Impulse reverberation added. Score provided by Boris Mudrinic. [3:28] HW2
Karg-Elert, Sigfrid: Ach Gott und Herr, Op. 65, No. 34Download View Lyrics
The gentle rocking accompaniment is derived from the first 4 notes of the Chorale, and is used in both inversions. Chorale appears in the pedal. Chromatic alterations and dynamic instructions point it in the sentimental direction despite these Baroque devices. "Equal" temperament, Impulse reverberation added. This is a setting of verse 4 that differs from lyrics below: "Zeuch uns nach dir nur für und für und gib, daß wir nachfahren . . . [double time] dir in dein Reich, und mach uns gleich den auserwählten Scharen. [1:50] HW2
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Pedalexercitium in G minor, BWV 598Download
Written for a student to practice the pedals, it is also an effective display of pedal resources. Well Temperament-Kellner, -4dB output volume, impulse reverberation added. [1:51] HW2
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 645Download View Lyrics
The first of the Schübler Chorales, so called because of the person who engraved them in copper, Georg Schübler. This is a transcription of the 4th movement of Cantata 140 for the 27th Sunday after Trinity (based on Matthew 25:1-13), which has the text "Zion hears the watchmen singing" (verse 2 in the lyric). Bach specifies: "Dextra 8 Fuss; Sinistra 8 Fuss; Pedal 16 Fuss." In other words, Right hand 8 foot (standard pitch), left hand 8 foot (standard pitch), Pedal 16 foot (an octave lower). Perhaps the reason for Bach's being so verbose is that these were actually published, a rarity in his lifetime. This version goes considerably beyond the instructions in the score. Young Temperament, -3dB output volume, Impulse Reverberation added. [3:39] HW2
Krebs, Johann Ludwig: Fantasia sopra Freu dich sehr, o meine Seele, Br III:03Download View Lyrics
The Chorale (stated on Swell Trompette with Nazard and Tierce, alternately with Hautbois coupled to Choir Basson at 8' pitch) is essentially a backdrop to a cheerful little concerto on just two Great Flutes (8' and 4') and Pedal Rohr Gedackt 16' with Nachthorn 8'. The temperament is equal, as opposed to original tuning. Impulse reverberation added. [3:32] HW2
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Aus tiefer Noth schrei' ich zu dir, BWV 686Download View Lyrics
The rich 4-part tapestry on the manuals is penetrated by a double canon of the chorale subject, a German chorale whose text is based on Psalm 130, De Profundis ("Out of the Depths"). Registration: Great Principal 8' + Gedeckt 8' + Octave 4' + Flute 4'; Chorale in Pedal: Octave 8' + Choralbass 4' with Choir Basson 16' super-coupled and Swell Trompete 8' + Hautbois 8 coupled; (repeat) Great Flute Harmonique 8' + Flute 4'; Pedal Nachthorn 8' with Choir Basson 16' super-coupled. Brad Lehman Temperament. -2dB output volume. [4:40] HW2
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ, BWV 722Download View Lyrics
Another Chorale Harmonization, with improvisatory material between phrases of the chorale. It is marked for manuals only, but the Phantom Organist has chosen to separate the florid interludes on The Trumpet Enchamade (Choir), and transfer the bass voice to a roaring 32' Pedal. Impulse reverberation added, Brad Lehman Temperament. WAV file is available in RAR format: here (6.6 MB). [1:5] HW2
Bach, Johann Sebastian: Ich hab mein Sach Gott heimgestellt, BWV 707Download View Lyrics
Strange and powerful angular outburst of blind commitment to fate. Reeds, flues and mixtures of Great and Pedal. -6dB output volume. Temperament WellTempered-5thComma. Impulse reverberation added. [3:12] HW2
