The Casavant Frères organ (opus 2871) at St. George's Memorial Anglican Church Oshawa, Ontario, Canada (1966) - Samples by Ken Bales
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Concerto in D minor (after Vivaldi), BWV 596
- A very energetic transcription of a Vivaldi concerto, with a restful middle movement. Arrangement of Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto Op. 3,
No. 11, RV565 or else Op. 12 by W.F. Bach. The variations in the arpeggios in the third movement were added to my performances years
ago. Fortunately, I wrote them in my personal score along with rather precise registration ideas. The movements are Allegro - Fugue - Largo e spiccato
- Allegro.
[11:12]
MO
- Franck, César: Chorale I
- Dedicated to Monsieur Eugène Gigout, this is the first of the monumental Trois Chorals written near the end of Franck's life.
[13:54]
MO
- Brahms, Johannes: Prelude and Fugue on O Traurigkeit
- The prelude presents the chorale on a solo reed stop accompanied by a generally ascending triplet pattern, which results in a slight tug when the
duple and triple rhythms occur at the same time. The exquisite fugue is in three voices, with the chorale sounded slowly in the pedal.

MO
- Schumann, Robert: Canon 1, Op. 56
- The first of six canons written for Organ or Pedal Piano in 1845, this sunny work belies its very strict construction - a canon at the octave with a 2
beat interval between first and second voice, over a pedal part that shores up the harmony. Since the organ can sustain indefinitely, a few long notes
in the pedal were joined rather than restruck every measure or two.
[2:4]
MO
- Armsdorf, Andreas: Herr Jesu Christ, dich zu uns wend'
- Bare bones trio with the exception of two notes in the left hand and a triad in the right at the end.
[0:56]
MO
- Buxtehude, Dietrich: Fuga in Bb Major, BuxWV 176
- Sectional fugue with repeated note in the first subject, alternating common meter and 12/8 with a dramatic moment or two and a few ad lib pedal notes.
[4:18]
MO
- Vierne, Louis: Méditation, Op. 31, No. 7
- Somewhat mystical and chromatic: if one could improvise this way at will, one could win over most organist search committees.
[3:54]
Midi file available.
MO
- Lübeck, Vincent: Nun lasst uns Gott dem Herren
- There are 6 verses set (verses 3 and 6 of the 8 verses available were omitted). Verse 1 and 2 are for two contrasting manuals plus double pedal. Verse
3 uses a running melody in the right hand and staccato chords in the left hand and pedal. Verse 4 for manuals alone, introduces a little 3-note
motive and playful echoes between the manuals. Verse 5 is much like verse 3, and verse 6 ends the set quietly on two manuals.
[4:49]
MO
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Concerto in G Major after Ernst, BWV 592
- Arrangement of concerto by Prince Johann Ernst von Saxe-Weimar. In three movements: [Allegro] - Grave - Presto. Bouncy first movement, pensive slow
movement reminiscent of Handel, and arpeggio-based third movement interspersed with splashy echoed chords.
