The Casavant Frères organ (opus 2871) at St. George's Memorial Anglican Church Oshawa, Ontario, Canada (1966) Samples by Ken Bales
- Vierne, Louis: Canon, Op. 31, No. 6
- Slightly oriental flavor introduced because of the prominent augmented 2nd interval.
[2:26]
Midi file available.
MO
- Brahms, Johannes: Prelude and Fugue in G minor
- The second of a pair of Preludes and Fugues. Wonderfully improvisatory throughout, with flashes of virtuosity in both manuals and pedals.
[5:34]
MO
- Dandrieu, Jean-François: Offertoire
- From his Premier livre de pièces d'Orgue (First Organ Book), this score obtained from the Mutopia project is divided in four sections, marked
Gravement, Marqué. Cornet/Positiv and Grand jeu with Pédale.
[4:57]
MO
- Vierne, Louis: Scherzetto, Op. 31, No. 14
- Frenzied French fun for flues.
[3:37]
Midi file available.
MO
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Ein feste Burg ist Unser Gott, BWV 720
- Registration is prescribed by Bach at the beginning: Fagotto in the left hand, Sesquialtera in the right hand. Thereafter he merely specifies manuals
(Oberwerk and Positiv). The chorale is used for the figuration, and is sounded at slower speed in various voices. The resulting effect is much lighter
than the ponderous hymn tune it is based on.
[3:31]
MO
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Fantasia in G Major, BWV 572
- A youthful piece of Bach in three distinct sections: 1) Light and cheerful arpeggios, using (in my version) echoes every measure; 2) Intense
rich harmonic progressions; 3) Heroic cadenzas in the manuals with pedal punctuation.
[8:9]
MO
- Vierne, Louis: Idylle mélancolique, Op. 31, No. 8
- A reassuring rhythmic motiv alternates with slithery chromaticism--it sounds more wistful than melancholy to me.
[3:18]
Midi file available.
MO
- Boehm, Georg: Auf meinen lieben Gott
- Chorale and four attractive variations.
[8:19]
MO
- Franck, César: Prélude, Fugue et Variation
- Actually 4 sections. 1) Andante cantabile: lilting 9/8 melody. 2) Lento: interlude with louder registration. 3) Allegro ma non troppo: Beautfully
worked out Fugue. 4) Andantino: The original melody and registration are reiterated, but the accompaniment figuration is now mostly in sixteenth
notes.
[8:4]
MO
- Sweelinck, Jan Pieterszoon: Variations on Mein junges Leben hat ein End'
- Six variations on a secular song.
