The Casavant Frères organ (opus 2871) at St. George's Memorial Anglican Church Oshawa, Ontario, Canada (1966) Samples by Ken Bales
- Scheidemann, Heinrich: Gott sei gelobet und gebenedeiet
- Chorale in Pedal, 3 voices on the manual.
[3:44]
MO
- Vierne, Louis: Cortège, Op. 31, No. 2
- Somewhat grotesque notions seem to haunt this funeral procession for foundation stops and reeds of all available pitches.
[3:22]
Midi file available.
MO
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Vater Unser im Himmelreich, BWV 682
- Rhythmically complex accompaniment hides the cantus firmus in canon on two manuals and pedal. The characteristic appogiatura motive reminds one of
some of the variations in The Art of the Fugue.
[6:13]
MO
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Toccata and Fugue in D minor (Dorian), BWV 538
- Although unfortunately rivaled in popularity by BWV 565, the Dorian Prelude is a wonderful energetic piece requiring three equally balanced divisions,
and the fugue is one of Bach's most thrilling works, well worth the time it takes to listen to.
[13:49]
MO
- Krebs, Johann Ludwig: Prelude and Fugue in F# Major, Br I:07
- The gentle prelude in 12/8 meter is followed by a chromatic fugue in Common Meter. The unusual key sounds not even slightly edgy in Equal Temperament.
[5:59]
MO
- Vierne, Louis: Lied, Op. 31, No. 17
- A 4-measure song weaves through various ranges of the manuals.
[5:16]
Midi file available.
MO
- Karg-Elert, Sigfrid: Ich dank dir schon durch deinen Sohn, Op. 65, No. 19
- The composer specifies three tempos and volume levels for each of the three verses of this "Choraltrio." Impulse reverberation added.
[3:45]
MO
- Buxtehude, Dietrich: Praeludium (and Fugue) in C Major, BuxWV 136
- In the middle of the 13th measure of this 96-measure piece is the indication "Fuga" with a jaunty subject and the jazzy chromatic descending
syncopation that accompanies it, but, typical of the sectional, improvisational nature of Buxtehude's organ works, measure 55 starts an entirely
different motiv with the indication "allegro" and at the 66th measure there is an abrupt shift to 12/8 meter, which persists to the end.
[4:55]
MO
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Prelude and Fugue in G Major, BWV 541
- A cheerful and engaging pair, this Prelude and Fugue is rated G for General Audiences. I think the stretto (a technique where the fugue subject in a
new voice begins before the old one ends, similar to a Round) at the end of the fugue is especially thrilling.
