The Casavant Frères organ (opus 2871) at St. George's Memorial Anglican Church Oshawa, Ontario, Canada (1966) - Samples by Ken Bales
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Toccata and Fugue in F, BWV 540
- The Toccata is an exuberant, energy-filled extravaganza with many deceptive cadences at the end. This relatively little-known double fugue is
enjoyable in its own right, however. The first subject is chromatic and the ornaments are preserved throughout. The second subject enters on the Swell
and is a jumpy little thing. When the first theme reënters in the alto, though, Bach surprises us by following it with a pedal entrance of the second
theme.

MO
- Karg-Elert, Sigfrid: Nun lasst uns Gott dem Herren, Op. 65, No. 31
- Subtitled "Allemande" but with unusual bravura, even for this composer. Impulse reverberation added.
[2:54]
MO
- Vierne, Louis: Canzona, Op. 31, No. 12
- The last piece in Book One of Opus 31 is marked Andante cantabile, and contains the instructions"Récit Trompette" for the plaintive melody and "G.O.
Flûtes" for the deliciously doleful accompaniment.
[4:43]
Midi file available.
MO
- Franck, César: Fantaisie in C Major
- In four main sections, marked Poco lento - restful with a canon in the middle; Allegretto cantando - containing rather virtuosic counterpoint; Quasi
lento - amazing sonic buildup and letdown; and Adagio - strangely comforting, like the soft movements at the end of each Mendelssohn Sonata.
[9:8]
MO
- Doles, Johann Friedrich: Auf meinen lieben Gott
- Doles was a pupil of Bach and the second to succeed him as cantor of St. Thomas of Leipzig. The cheerful accompaniment surrounds rather prosaic
statements of the Chorale on reed stops.
[2:24]
MO
- Scheidt, Samuel: Wir glauben all' an einen Gott
- Though it starts like a 3 voice fughetta between Swell and Pedal, the Chorale is soon sounded boldly on the Great, with a very active Pedal part.
[2:30]
MO
- Schumann, Robert: Fugue 1, Op. 60
- The first of six fugues written on the name of Bach. This is marked "Langsam" ("slowly") and at Ms. 34 "Nach und nach schneller and stärker" (more and
more rapid and loud) which does give quite an urgency to the next 25 measures. It would have been ludicrous to carry the accelerando to the very end,
however.
[5:49]
MO
- Weckmann, Matthias: Nun freut euch, lieben Christen g'mein
- Lightly decorated chorale tune in the right hand in canon with straightforward chorale in the pedal.
[1:46]
MO
- Pachelbel, Johann: Magnificat Tertii Toni
- 11 fugues based on original subjects.
