Vermeulen Brothers Organ at Congregation "Vloedschuur," Heteren, Holland (1959) Samples by Hauptwerk.nl
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Trio Sonata No. 2, BWV 526
- The Vivace [RH - Hoofdwerk: Holpijp 8' + Octaaf 4' + Mistuur 3 st.;
LH - Zwellwerk: Roerfluit 8' + Blokfluit 4' + Octaaf 2' + Scherp 3 st.;
Pedaal: Subbas 16' + Gedekt 8]
starts with the two hands playing parallel thirds, followed by a scintillating dialogue, and coming together in thirds again to modulate to a
different key. Interesting new ideas abound, and much use is made of trills and held notes. A single measure in the pedal transitions smoothly to an
abbreviated form of the beginning. In the Largo [RH - Hoofdwerk: Holpijp 8' + Roerfluit 4';
LH - Zwellwerk: Roerfluit 8' + Gemshoorn 8' + Tremulant
Pedaal: Gedekt 8] long held notes in one hand intertwine with an expressive lyrical motive, underpinned by a prodding bass line. The Allegro
[RH - Hoofdwerk: Prestant 8' + Octaaf 4' + Mixtuur 3 st.;
LH - Zwellwerk: Roerfluit 8' + Prestant 4' + Octaaf 2' + Sesquialter 2 st.;
Pedaal: Subbas 16' + Gedekt 8 + Koraal 4'] has two main themes, the first bold and forthright, the second angular, almost brash, which provide
contrasting sections but are not used together. Trills and held notes figure in this last movement as well.
[11:6]
HW1
- Karg-Elert, Sigfrid: Herr und Ältster deiner Kreuzgemeinde, Op. 65, No. 14
- Billed as a Fughetta with a tempo indication of "Adagissimo e sempre teneramente," this is the only piece I have ever encountered with the time
signature of 24/32. The text seems to be "lost Moravian." Registration: Zwelwerk Gemshoorn 8' + Tremulant (stilled at very end) coupled to HW Holpijp
8'; PD Subbas 16'. Impulse reverberation added.
[1:42]
HW1
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier, BWV 731
- All in all, a very lovely interpretation of one of Bach's favorite chorales. In the second half, the chorale momentarily turns into an obbligato (the
real melody is hidden in the lower voices).
[1:25]
HW1
- Walther, Johann Gottfried: Preludio con Fuga d-moll
- The Prelude contains, sequential repetition, echo effects, and less than usual ornamentation. The short Fugue contains a recognizable repeated note
and very short episodes.
[4:40]
HW1
- Karg-Elert, Sigfrid: Jesu, hilf siegen, Op. 65, No. 26
- Composer's adjectives: "Adagissimo, divoto, ligato, espressivo." Registration: Zwelwerk Gemshoorn 8' + Blokfluit 4' (withdrawn at end) + Tremulant,
coupled to HW Holpijp 8' and PD Subbas 16'. Impulse reverberation added.
[1:24]
HW1
- Walther, Johann Gottfried: Nun komm der heiden Heiland
- Playful fragments of the Chorale permeate the three-voice manual part (Hoofdwerk: Prestant 8' + Octaaf 4' + Mixtuur 3 st.), and a slow moving,
dynamically expressive Chorale sounds an octave higher in the Pedaal (coupled from Zwelwerk Schalmei 8' + Gemshoorn 8' + Sesquialter 2 st.).
[1:17]
HW1
- Alberti, Johann Friedrich: Herr Gott! dich loben wir
- The first section is stately, with 3 voices on the manuals (HW Holpijp 8' + Octaaf 4'), one on the pedal (Zwelwerk Schalmei 8' coupled to PD Subbas
16'). The second, "Alio Modo," is a breath of fresh contrapuntal air (Zwelwerk Blokfluit 4' + Octaaf 2' coupled to HW Holpijp 8' + Octaaf 4', coupled
to PD Subbas 16'). Impulse reverberation added.
[2:14]
HW1
- Weckmann, Matthias: Ach wir armen Sünder
- Three variations, all for two separate manuals and pedal. Registration: Var 1: Chorale in tenor (8va lower) HW Octaaf 4'; Zwelwerk Gemshoorn 8' +
Blokfluit 4' coupled to PD Subbas 16';
Var. 2: Chorale in soprano HW Holpijp 8' + Octaaf 4; Zwelwerk Gemshoorn 8' + Octaaf 2'; PD Gedekt 8';
Var. 3: Chorale in tenor HW Holpijp 8' + Octaaf 4; Zwelwerk Gemshoorn 8' + Blokfluit 4' + Octaaf 2'; PD Subbas 16' + Gedekt 8';
ZW/HW coupler added near end. Impulse reverberation added.
[4:47]
HW1
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Christe, Aller Welt Trost, BWV 670
- The chorale is in the Tenor voice, in very long notes. This setting is a bit esoteric; it would take several hearings to pick up all the subtleties.
Registration: LH (Chorale) Zwelwerk Schalmei 8';
RH Hoofdwerk Holpijp 8' + Octaaf 4';
Pedaal Subbas 16' + Gedekt 8'.
[4:20]
HW1
- Buxtehude, Dietrich: Praeludium in E minor, BuxWV 142
- Five major sections, the first two in Common Meter, ending with a very "blue" note that ushers in some heavy chromaticism in 3/2. The meter switches
to Common again just 2 measures before a loud transitional passage which ushers in a delightfully bouncy 12/8 motiv that continues to the end.
[7:44]
HW1
- Walther, Johann Gottfried: Warum betrübst du dich, mein Herz
- Ornamented Chorale is sounded on the Zwelwerk Schalmei 8', with chromatic and ornate underpinnings on the Hoofdwerk Prestant 8' + Roerfluit 4' and
Pedaal Subbass 16' + Gedackt 8'.
[2:46]
HW1
- Clérambault, Louis-Nicolas: Dialogue sur les Grands Jeux
- The final piece of Suite du Premier Ton for organ is marked "Fort grave" (Bold, ponderous). Contrasting full ensemble with lighter stops, this was
made on my Windows 98 computer as a standin for other possible performances that may be made when and if the W2000 hard disk is fixed.
[2:11]
HW1
- Vierne, Louis: Berceuse (sur les paroles classiques), Op. 31, No. 19
- A gentle lullaby, in 2/4 instead of the usual 6/8 meter. Registration:
Ms. 1 - Zwelwerk.Gemshoorn 8' + Blokfluit 4 coupled to HW Holpijp 8'; PD Subbas 16' + Gedekt 8';
Ms. 28 - Remove Zwelwerk Blokfluit 4';
Ms. 36 - Restore Blokfluit 4';
Ms. 68 - Remove Zwelwerk Blokfluit 4', couple Zwelwerk to PD; remove PD Gedekt 8'. Impulse reverberation added.
[3:37]
Midi file available.
HW1
- Reger, Max: Jesu, meine Zuversicht, Op. 67, No. 20
- Chorale is in the soprano on the Hoofdwerk (Octaaf 4' played an octave lower) accompanied by Zwelwerk (Gemshoorn 8' + Blokfuit 4') and PD (Subbass 16
+ ZW/PD coupler). Impulse reverberation added.
[1:15]
HW1
- Krebs, Johann Ludwig: Trio in F, Br II:34
- Audacious motive with a turn ornament makes this piece memorable. It is virtually the same as the Trio in Bb (No. 37) with the exception of the
ornament. Registration: RH HW Holpijp 8' + Octaaf 4'; LH Zwelwerk Gemshoorn 8' + Blockfluit 4' + Octaaf 2'; PD Subbas 16' + Gedekt 8'. Impulse
revereberation added.
[2:31]
HW1
- Krebs, Johann Ludwig: Praeludium in C minor, Br II:02
- A turn (G Ab G F G) in one voice, followed by three chords with all voices is the unifying feature of this sprightly prelude. Registration: Zwelwerk
Octaaf 2' coupled to HW Holpijp 8' + Octaaf 4' and to PD Subbas 16'. Impulse reverberation added.
[1:15]
HW1
- Reger, Max: Straf mich nicht in deinem Zorn, Op. 67, No. 37
- Chorale alternates between the tenor voice (HW Holpijp 8' + Octaaf 4') and the soprano (Zwelwerk Gemshoorn 8' + Blokfluit 4') with constant Pedaal
(Subbas 16' + Gedekt 8'). Impulse reverberation added.
[1:23]
HW1
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Trio in G Major, BWV 586
- Transcription by Bach of a trio for two melody instruments and continuo by Telemann.
[4:34]
HW1
- Reger, Max: Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir, Op. 135a, No. 4
- Beautiful, spare, almost mediaeval sounding responsorial setting alternating between cantor (HW Oktaaf 4' played an octave lower) and choir (Zwelwerk
Gemshoorn 8' + Blokfluit 4' [or 8' alone]); PD Subbas 16' + Gedekt 8' (ending, withdraw Gedeckt 8', add ZW/PD coupler). Impulse reverberation added.
[1:56]
HW1
- Vạhal, Jan: Fugue No. 8
- Sturdy steps of ascending major thirds constitute the fugue subject. The fugue begins on the HW Holpijp 8' + Octaaf 4' and charmingly relieved twice
by Zwelwerk Gemshoorn 8' + Octaaf 2'. At the end the Zwelwerk coupler is added and a final statement of the fugue subject on the Pedal (Subbas 16'
+Gedekt 8') is preceded and followed by organ points. Impulse reverberation added.
[2:48]
HW1
- Reger, Max: Alles ist an Gottes Segen, Op. 67, No. 2
- Triplet rhythm throughout, Chorale in the Tenor on Zwelwerk Schalmei 8'. Impulse reverberation added.
[0:54]
HW1
- Karg-Elert, Sigfrid: Erschienen ist der herrlich Tag, Op. 65, No. 25
- Initial imitation between Soprano and Tenor voices emphasizes the fanfare implicit in the Chorale. Nine-voice chords, terrace dynamics and 3 Generals
transform 7 stops into a 3-manual organ. Gen 1 emulates Great and Pedal: Zwelwerk Schalmei 8' + Octaaf 2' coupled to HW Holpijp 8' + Octaaf 4'
and to PD Subbas 16' + HW/PD. Gen 2 triggers Swell - Zwelwerk Schalmei 8' + Gemshoorn 8' + Blokfluit 4' + Octaaf 2' coupled to empty HW. Gen
3 masquerades as Choir - Zwelwerk Gemshoorn 8' + Blokfluit 4' coupled to empty HW. Impulse reverberation added.
