Bosch-Schnitger Organ, Vollenhove/Overijssel (1686/1720) - Samples by Prof. Helmut Maier
- Buxtehude, Dietrich: Prelude and Fugue in G minor, BuxWV 149
- The Prelude and Fugue in G minor is a rollicking precursor to the great organ
preludes and fugues of J.S. Bach, but instead of two separate movements, it
consists of four contrasting sections, the last of which is an exquisite fugue.
[7:58] (a=420 Hz)
HW3.11
- Buxtehude, Dietrich: Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam, BuxWV 180
- Very spontaneously ornamented chorale treatment with amusing sequences near the end in the accompaniment. Registration: RH Chorale: Hoofdwerk Prestant
8' + Octaaf 4' + Cornet 4 Sterck; LH Rugpositief Holpijp 8' + Fluit 4' + Nasard 3' + Woodfluit 2'; PD Subbas 16' + Holfluit 8' + Octaaf 4'.
[3:39] (a=420 Hz)

HW2>3
- Buxtehude, Dietrich: Durch Adams Fall ist ganz verderbt, BuxWV 183
- Chorale (RP Holpijp 8' + Prestant 4' + Nasat 3' + Octaaf 2' + Sexquialter 2 sterck) as usual ends with an elaborate flourish. Other voices on HW
Rohrfluit 8' + Fluit 4' + Fluit 2'; PD Subbas 16' + Prestant 8'.
[2:32] (a=420 Hz)
HW2>3
- Buxtehude, Dietrich: Praeludium in G minor, BuxWV 148
- Opens with Hoofdwerk flourishes over organ points in the Pedaal. The next section labeled Allegro is a short transition of a chromatic bent which
leads to a fughetta on a repeated note theme, played on the Rugwerk. Then follows a rolling 3/2 section for three voices on HW and PD. Finally a
2-measure passacaglia theme enters in the PD, modulates a few times, and ends with a statement in Bb that shifts smoothly to a Phrygian cadence in the
original key.
[6:15] (a=420 Hz)
HW3.11
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Alle Menschen müssen sterben, BWV 1117
- From the Neumeister Chorale Collection. In three sections: The first is played on the Hauptwerk (Bourdon 16' + Prestant 8' + Octaaf 4' + Octaaf 2');
the second is a virtuosic variation with rapid-fire thirty-second notes, also on the Hauptwerk but without the 16' and with the Mixtuur 2-4 Sterck for
clarity; the third is a grand coda reinstating the 16' and adding the Cymbeln 4-6 Sterck and Trompete 8' to the Hauptwerk and utilizing the
Rugpositief Holpijp 8' + Prestant4' + Dulciaan 8' coupled to Pedaal Subbas 16' and Bazuin 16'.
[2:2] (a=420 Hz)
HW2>3
- Bruhns, Nicholas: Prelude and Fugue in G minor
- Nicholas Bruhns studied composition and organ with Dietrich Buxtehude, whose influence is evident from this composition. Thanks to Gernot Wurst for
the printed score of the Prelude, to "Organ Morgan" for suggesting the pairing of the fugue, score available here.
[3:37] (a=420 Hz)
HW2>3
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Herr Jesu Christ, dich zu uns wend', BWV 632
- Harmonized Chorale (Hoofdwerk Rohrfluit 8' + Octaaf 4' + Octaaf 2') followed by a cheerful setting with pedal presenting the chorale in dimunition (HW
Prestant 8' + Octaaf 4' + Octaaf 2' + Mixtuur 2-4 Sterck; Pedaal Subbas 16' + Prestant 8' + Trombone 8').
[1:49] (a=420 Hz)
HW2>3
- Buxtehude, Dietrich: Vater unser im Himmelreich, BuxWV 219
- A beautifully decorated Chorale presentation with portions of the melody used in the simple two-voice plus pedal accompaniment.. Registration: RH
Chorale on Rugwerk Holpijp 8' + Prestant 4' + Octaaf 2' + Sexquialter 2 St.; LH on Hoofdwerk Prestant 8' + Fluit 4'; Pedal Subbas 16' + Prestant 8'.
[2:8] (a=420 Hz)
HW3.11
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Das Alte Jahr Vergangen Ist, BWV 614
- This is a sad and expressive farewell to the secular old year. Chorale: Hoofdwerk Vox Humana 8'; Rugpositief Holpijp 8'; Pedaal Subbas 16' +
Holfluit 8'; Prelude: Hoofdwerk add Bourdon 8' + Tremulant; Rugpositief add Fluit 4' + Tremulant; Pedaal withdraw Holfluit 8', add Prestant 8'.
[2:42] (a=420 Hz)
Midi file available.
HW2>3
- Buxtehude, Dietrich: Praeludium in D Major, BuxWV 139
- Several contrasting textures and moods show Buxtehude's engaging spontaneity, this Prelude is as close to a recorded improvisation as we could hope
for.
[5:16] (a=420 Hz)
HW2>3.1
- Gigout, Eugène: Cantilène
- No. 12 of 12 Pieces for Organ, it is indeed an "instrumental passage of sustained lyricism." A bit of a novelty really, since the piece was written
for three manuals with expression. Gabler Temperament.
[3:15] (a=420 Hz)
HW2>3.1
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Valet will ich dir geben, BWV 736
- A funeral piece which celebrates life rather than deploring it. Unusual 24/16 meter,
chorale in pedal. The tune is often used on Palm Sunday for the opening procession
to the words "All Glory Laud and Honor."
[4:29] (a=420 Hz)
HW2>3
- Buxtehude, Dietrich: Praeludium in F# minor, BuxWV 146
- The first section opens with flourishes on the Hoofdwerk over an organ point in the Pedal; this gives way to a homophonic, hymnlike section using
downward-resolving suspensions in 3rds against an occasionally jarring chromatic bass line with one dramatic pause and a concluding flourish. The
second section is marked Grave and is a sombre fughetta with a dotted note motive reminiscent of that used in the great G minor Prelude and Fugue. The
third section, played on the Rugpositiv, is marked Vivace and involves a playful and syncopated motive with the Pedaal part being pulled down from the
Hauptwerk. Though not marked as a section, flourishes recur, so the Hoofdwerk is once again used.
[7:12] (a=420 Hz)
HW3.11
- Bach, Johann Sebastian: Fugue in B minor on a Theme of Corelli, BWV 579
- An early fugue based on a theme by Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713). Suited to a small 2-manual organ, this was a favorite to practice on my residence
organ.
[5:5] (a=420 Hz)
