O Lamm Gottes, BWV 656 Click to Listen, [8:24]
The innocent sounding beginning leads to a rhythmically powerful third verse and culminates in a glorious chromatic ending. The words of this chorale are based on the Agnus Dei. The Eighteen Leipzig Chorales are Bach's last work. He died after dictating the last of them to his son-in-law Altnikol. I transcribed this from the Widor-Schweitzer edition of Bach's Complete Works for organ, Vol. VIII, with markings used in my performance career. Instrument: Schantz/Rodgers, (1966/2000) at First Baptist Church of Riverside, California recorded by Jonathan Orwig

Chorale Text
Verses 1. and 2.
O Lamm Gottes, unschuldig,
am Stamm des Kreuzes geschlachtet,
Allzeit erfund'n geduldig,
Wie wohl du warest verachtet;
All Sünd hast du getragen,
sonst müssten wir verzagen.
Erbarm dich unser, o Jesu!

Verse 3.
Gib uns deinen Frieden o Jesu!
--Nicolaus Rostock, 1531

Verses 1. and 2.
O Lamb of God all holy,
Who on the Cross didst sufer,
And patient still and lowly,
Thyself to scorn didst offer:
Our sins by Thee were taken,
Or hope had us forsaken:
Have mercy upon us, o Jesu.

Verse 3.
Have mercy upon us, O Jesu.
--Arthur Tozer Russell (1806-1874)
