Allein Gott in der Höh, BWV 662 Click to Listen, [5:38]
The first of three settings of the tune based on the plainsong Gloria in Excelsis. This is probably Bach's most florid and esoteric setting in the entire collection of The Eighteen Chorales. The solo is played on the Swell Cornet. Instrument: Schantz/Rodgers, (1966/2000) at First Baptist Church of Riverside, California recorded by Jonathan Orwig

Chorale Text
German:
Allein Gott in der Höh' sei Ehr'
Und Dank für seine Gnade,
Darum dass nun und nimmermehr
Uns rühren kann kein Schade.
Ein Wohgefalln Gott an uns hat,
Nun ist gross Fried ohn Unterlass,
All Fehd hat nun ein Ende.
--Nicolaus Decius, 1539

English:
All glory be to God on High,
Who hath our race befriended!
To us no harm shall now come nigh,
The feud at last is ended:
God showeth His goodwill toward men,
And peace shall dwell on earth again;
Oh thank Him for His goodness.
--Catherine Winkworth, 1865
