Partita on Ach, was soll ich sünder machen, BWV 770 Click to Listen, [11:54]
Schweitzer is of the opinion that Bach may have written the first 8 variations, but the last two are very unlike his style, particularly with regard to the treatment of the manual changes. It may be that Bach copied the work of one of his pupils. No matter who wrote it, once the gloomy first verse is acknowledged, it is a sprightly set of variations. Instrument: St. Anne's Church, Moseley, Birmingham, England (1874) - Samples by Martin Dyde

Chorale Text
German:

Ach, was soll ich Sünder machen,
Ach, wass soll ich fangen an?
Mein Gewissen klagt mich an,
Es beginnet aufzuwachen.
Dies ist meine Zuversicht:
Meinen Jesum lass ich nicht.
--Joahann Flittner, Himmlisch Lustgärtlein, 1661

English:

Wretched Sinner, woe to me!
What shall e'er become of me?
Pangs of conscience me torment,
My poor soul to its bitter end.
This I know, for while I live
Jesus will I never leave.
--Tr. Edouard Nies-Berger, 1955
