- Suite 2 for Harpsichord
[9:40]
This suite consists of 6 movements: Prelude, Almand, Courante, Saraband, Chacone, Siciliano. The Prelude has a theme consisting of ascending thirds.
The Almand is filled with quaint ornamentation, especially an appogiatura of a downward 5th a measure of Purcellian poignancy. The courante is about
as cheerful as G minor can get. The Saraband sounds on various combinations of the harpsichord's two 8 foot stops. The Chacone is a wonderful piece
all on its own, developing a kind of trance-like mania. The perpetual 4-measure bass theme suddenly changes to join the frenzy, but calm and order are
restored near the end. As if in penitance, the final Sicialano is a marvelous dirge with a drone bass in the first half.
