- Echo Fantasia 4 (Ionian)
[7:52] (A=465)
The literal echo section comprises less than a page of this 6-page score. Sequences and repeated notes and scalar passages comprise the rest, much
like a keyboard improvisation, but there is a great deal of octave shifting on the same manual, which serves as another kind of echo. The piece starts
on a delicate Oberwerk registration of Gedackt 8' + Rohrflöte 4' + Nassat 3' + Sifflöte 1'; the first time the Hauptwerk sounds it is a bit of a
shock, because it is based on a lower pitch: Bordun 16' + Principal 8 + Octava 4' + Octava 2' + Mixtura III. But both registrations are sufficiently
bright to keep the florid passages clear and the slower passages tonally interesting.
