Fantasia which develops each phrase of the chorale in imitative counterpoint, then (usually) states that phrase slowly in one or more parts. These techniques were used by a composer born nearly 100 years before J. S. Bach, illustrating the German chorale foundation which underlies the latter's work. Instrument: Renaissance Organ (ca. 1587) in gothic church in Smecno, Czech Republic - "Live" Second Edition - Samples by Jiri Zurek

Chorale Text
German:
Ich ruf' zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ,
Ich bitt'; erhör mein Klagen;
Verleih' mir Gnad' zu dieser Frist,
lass mich doch nicht verzagen,
Den rechten Weg, o Herr, ich mein',
Den wollest du mir geben,
Dir zu leben,
Meinem Nächsten nütz zu sein,
Dein Wort zu halten eben.

English:
I call to Thee, Lord Jesus Christ,
O hear my sore complaining!
In thy good time unto me list,
Thine ear to me inclining!
True faith in Thee, O Lord, I seek,
O make me now and wholly
Love Thee solely,
My neighbor hold as self,
And keep Thy word e'er holy.
