- Herzlich tut mich verlangen (I)
[1:46]
In this first setting of the Passion chorale, Brahms places the melody in the soprano voice, decorated with passing tones, The interval of a rising
second and a rhythm that emphasizes the 2nd and 4th (weaker) beats play a major part in the pedal part. Opens on HW (Principal 8' + Rohrflöte 8'
+ Rohrflöte Celeste 8'+ Gamba 8' + Gamba Celeste 8' + Holztraverse 4') with PD Subbas 16' + Octave 8'. Retires to Positiv (Bourdon 8' +
Rohrflöte Celeste 8' + Holztraverse 4' - PD Gedact 8' replaces Principal and Positiv/PD coupler is added). Later the Holztraverse 4' is retired
from the Positiv for a truly restful contrast, and then the entire chorale resumes on HW with added Octave 4' and Octave added to PD. No reverberation
was useed, but both divisions have enclosures in this version of the extended set.

German:
Herzlich tut mich verlangen
Nach einen selgen End,
Weil ich hier bin umfangen
Mit Trübsal und Elend.
Ich hab Lust abzuscheiden
Von dieser argen Welt,
Sehn mich nach ewgen Freuden,
O Jesu, komm nur bald!
--Christoph Knoll, 1605
English:
My heart is filled with longing
To pass away in peace;
For woes are round me thronging
And trials will not cease.
Oh fain would I be hasting,
From thee, dark world of gloom,
To gladness everlasting.
O Jesus! quickly come.
