Pensive prelude joined with, some say "Tragic" others say "Uplifting" Fugue. Alternate version, with the Prelude much slower than usual, suggested by
Russ Davis:
- The slow-speaking low C pedal note at the beginning has an extraordinary effect of real gravity when taken at the slower tempo that you just
don't get in the faster tempo, yet providing just as good a foundation from which to jump off into the fugue.
