Prelude and Fugue on O Traurigkeit Click to Listen [4:36]
The prelude presents the chorale on a solo reed stop accompanied by a generally ascending triplet pattern, which results in a slight tug when the duple and triple rhythms occur at the same time. The exquisite fugue is in three voices, with the chorale sounded slowly in the pedal. Instrument: The Casavant Frères organ (opus 2871) at St. George's Memorial Anglican Church Oshawa, Ontario, Canada (1966) - Samples by Ken Bales

Chorale Text
German:
O Traurigkeit,
O Herzeleid!
Ist das nicht zu beklagen?
Gott des Vaters einig Kind
Wird ins Grab getragen.
--Anonymous (1628)

English:
O sorrow deep!
Who would not weep
with heartfelt pain and sighing!
God the Father's only Son
in the tomb is lying.
